Focus on "digital culture" in moral and lifestyle education for students

Equipping students with “digital culture” and cyberspace behavior skills should be part of the work of building school culture, moral education, and lifestyle for students today. This not only helps students protect themselves but also contributes to building a safe, healthy, and humane online environment.

Challenges from the dark side of technology

Cyberspace has become the “second living space” of students. Young people’s learning, communication, entertainment and information searching are closely linked to digital platforms, from social networks, learning forums to chat and content sharing applications. Students can access a huge source of knowledge, participate in open courses, connect with international friends and improve their adaptability in a globally competitive environment.

This brings many opportunities to develop new knowledge and skills, but at the same time also poses challenges in terms of information security, ethics and behavioral skills in cyberspace. The huge amount of information requires young people to know how to select, analyze and evaluate. Fake news, toxic information, sensational content, and deviant trends can cause confusion and misdirection if they lack critical thinking skills. The impacts of foreign cultures, pragmatic lifestyles and individualism can also negatively affect the ideals, ethics and value systems of a segment of students.

According to Nguyen Thi Nhung, Deputy Head of the Department of Students, Ministry of Education and Training , besides the great benefits that technology brings, the online environment also has many potential risks, from harmful information, to the abuse of personal data, especially for students, there is also the risk of violating children's rights, such as bullying, fraud, internet addiction...

“The country currently has more than 26 million students, of which preschool, primary and secondary school students account for about 20 million, accounting for 80%. Thus, the number of children under the management of the education sector is very large, this is a big challenge for the sector in protecting them from bad actors in general and in the online environment in particular,” said Deputy Director Nguyen Thi Nhung at a training course to improve the capacity of staff and teachers in charge of protecting children in the online environment organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in September.

In recent years, schools have paid more attention to digital citizenship education. A number of extracurricular programs, propaganda activities, and experiential models have been deployed to raise awareness among students. However, in reality, digital culture education still has many shortcomings such as: management and organization of cultural and behavioral education for children and students in the online environment have not been strongly implemented, and the ability to grasp information, orient political ideology, ethics, and beautiful lifestyles for children and students is still limited.

The changes in digital life, along with the challenges from the negative side of technology, are requiring strong innovation in moral and lifestyle education for students.

Equipping " digital literacy " is part of moral and lifestyle education .

Political and ideological education is always a central and consistent task throughout the entire education sector. In the context of digital transformation, international integration and the strong impact of social networks, orienting ideology, ethics and lifestyle for students is becoming more urgent, aiming to build a young generation with courage, aspiration and responsibility for the country.

According to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Le Quan, in recent times, localities, Departments of Education and Training, and educational institutions across the country have made efforts and responsibilities in implementing and deploying the contents of Decision 1299/QD-TTg, Directive 08/CT-TTg and Decision 1895/QD-TTg on building a culture of behavior, educating ethics, lifestyle, and revolutionary ideals for youth and children.

The Ministry of Education and Training has also submitted to the Prime Minister for approval and implementation of Decision No. 311/QD-TTg dated March 5, 2022 of the Prime Minister approving the Program "Education on revolutionary ideals, ethics, and cultural lifestyle for youth, teenagers, and children in cyberspace for the period 2022-2030".

Up to now, according to the assessment of the Ministry of Education and Training, 100% of educational institutions have built and implemented cultural codes of conduct in schools, moral education and lifestyle work has become increasingly systematic, quality and effectiveness have been significantly improved. Social work and psychological counseling in schools have been implemented synchronously, forming a network to support students, contributing to preventing and solving their difficulties. The landscape and educational environment have been gradually improved in the direction of safety, friendliness, democracy, and discipline, creating a change in building school culture.

The work of preventing and combating school violence, social evils, crimes and law violations is focused on integrating with moral education, lifestyle, self-protection skills, with many solutions and implementation forms...

“Many school culture models have been replicated, and coordination between schools, families, and society has become more substantial. Teachers have been trained in psychological counseling and life skills in schools. Ethical values and lifestyles have been effectively integrated into educational programs and experiential activities,” said Nguyen Thi Nhung, Deputy Head of the Department of Students, at the conference summarizing the work of building a behavioral culture for adolescents and children of the Ministry of Education and Training held on December 5.

However, according to Deputy Minister Le Quan, in the coming time, the entire education sector needs to continue to innovate more strongly and creatively in the work of educating ethics, lifestyle, revolutionary ideals and life skills for young people, with one of the key tasks being to strengthen digital culture education and cyberspace behavior skills for students.
