A week after Samsung's summer Unpacked event, Chinese smartphone maker Tecno officially unveiled the Phantom Ultimate G Fold, the world's first G-shaped 3-fold phone. This is Tecno's latest idea to show off its design and technology capabilities, but there are no plans to release a commercial version.
The Phantom Ultimate G Fold was teased by Tecno ahead of Samsung's big event, a marketing move to gain traction before its Korean rival unveils the Galaxy G Fold, a 3-fold phone rumored to launch later this year.
Previously, Tecno also applied a similar strategy when announcing Phantom Ultimate 2 before Huawei launched Mate XT. However, Huawei's device still won the final victory thanks to commercialization.
The Phantom Ultimate G Fold has a 9.94-inch main screen that can be folded in three parts. Unlike the Z-shaped design of the Mate XT, Tecno chose to fold the letter G to protect the entire screen when closed. The device is also equipped with a secondary screen on the outside, supporting users in quick operations without having to open the phone.
The overall design helps the device achieve a thickness of 11.49 mm when folded and only 3.49 mm when fully opened. These parameters are impressive even for some famous flagship models such as Honor Magic V5 or Galaxy Z Fold 7.
The folding mechanism is built by Tecno based on a dual hinge system, consisting of a small teardrop hinge and a larger main hinge. When folded, the small crease allows the right side of the screen to close like a book, while the large hinge folds the rest. The self-locking mechanism helps keep the device secure, while allowing for use at various folding angles.
To increase durability, Tecno said it used 2,000 MPa ultra-durable steel for the hinge and a 0.3 mm thick titanium fiber for the back cover.
The Phantom Ultimate G Fold is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery, a high-performance chip and a versatile triple camera system, according to information from Tecno. However, specific configuration details have not been announced yet.
The product will be brought by Tecno to the MWC 2026 exhibition in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the technology world predicts that Samsung's Galaxy G Fold model will cost around $3,000 , equivalent to the current Mate XT.
