In the days leading up to the 2026 Lunar New Year, the banks of the Red River, from the suburban communes to some wards of Hanoi, are covered in the lush green of banana orchards laden with bunches. In the Red River alluvial plain area of Linh Nam ward (Hanoi), the bananas grown for Tet are mainly South American varieties with large bunches and many hands, as well as fragrant pink and green Cavendish bananas.

Mr. Vu Van Dung (107 Thuy Linh Street, Linh Nam Ward) has 6 years of experience in banana cultivation. Previously, his family specialized in growing mandarin oranges, but due to poor yields, they switched to growing bananas.

Currently, Mr. Dung is cultivating about 3 acres of bananas, and expects to harvest over 1,000 bunches for the upcoming Tet holiday. If sales are good, he plans to expand his banana plantation to about 7 to 8 acres next year.

In the Thuy Linh area, a floodplain near the Red River, the banana plantation area has expanded to approximately 12 to 13 hectares. In the last three years, due to natural disasters and flooding from storms, especially Typhoon Yagi , banana production has been affected, but in return, prices have increased significantly.

"This year is the most favorable, with high prices and a good harvest," Mr. Dung shared. The expected wholesale price at the farm for a good bunch is around 300,000 - 350,000 VND. After passing through intermediaries and reaching consumers, the price of a bunch could go up to over 1 million VND, or retail by weight at around 40,000 - 45,000 VND/kg.

The banana bunches are wrapped in specialized plastic film after the banana flowers have finished blooming and the fruit begins to grow. This is a mandatory step to prevent pests and diseases, ensuring the bananas look good in time for Tet (Vietnamese New Year).

The alluvial plains along the Red River in Hanoi used to grow traditional crops like mandarin oranges, but now many farmers have shifted to growing bananas — a crop that provides a more stable income and involves fewer technical risks.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duong (Khuyen Luong port area) said that he has about 6 acres of land where he grows bananas in combination with various vegetables.
