Actor Ryan Reynolds' (right) team failed to achieve four consecutive promotions. |
Before the final round of the Championship, the Welsh team only needed one win to secure a top-six finish and keep their hopes of reaching the Premier League alive. However, things didn't go their way as their direct rivals Hull City won, thus overtaking them to claim the last play-off spot.
The match was full of excitement. Middlesbrough took the lead, but Wrexham quickly responded with a superb free-kick from Josh Windass. Sam Smith then put the home side ahead 2-1, reigniting hopes of a spectacular performance in the stands.
However, the advantage didn't last long. Just minutes later, Middlesbrough equalized 2-2, bringing the game back to a tie. The second half saw Wrexham throwing everything into attack as they needed to win, but opportunities were wasted, including Windass's shot that went over the bar in the final minute.
The draw meant Phil Parkinson's side finished in 7th place, just two points behind the play-off zone. The dream ended for the team that had achieved three consecutive promotions from League Two to the Championship under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham's rapid rise has therefore been halted, at least for another season. Their dream of continuing their fairytale run in England must be put on hold, while the Championship will remain their arena for the next season.
