When Chelsea crushed PSG 3-0 in the final at MetLife Stadium (USA) on July 14, no one expected that two young rookies - who had been relegated with their old club - would be present in the moment of lifting the World Cup.
The 2024/25 season seemed to end in bitterness for Essugo. The 20-year-old midfielder was loaned to Las Palmas from Sporting Lisbon, playing brilliantly throughout the season but helplessly watching the island club relegated. Before the summer had even cooled down, Chelsea unexpectedly spent 22.3 million euros to bring the Portuguese "gem" to Stamford Bridge. And just a few weeks later, Essugo was named in the squad for the Club World Cup - something few expected.
Coach Enzo Maresca gave Essugo a chance in all three matches of the tournament, and the young talent responded with convincing performances. “Even in my dreams, I could not have imagined this,” Essugo said after winning his first major title.
