Malaysian expert criticizes domestic football for relying on naturalized players

(Dan Tri) - Legendary Malaysian player Datuk Jamal Nasir openly criticized his country's football, because the current Malaysian team is too dependent on naturalized players.

Speaking to Malaysian media, Datuk Jamal Nasir said: “We cannot always rely on naturalized players. The Malaysian team needs to put their faith in domestic players.”

“Every time the naturalised players fail to return to the team, the Malaysian team collapses. That shows that Harimau Malaya has no confidence in the remaining players in the team. We need to be brave to change. The national team must have competition,” football legend Datuk Jamal Nasir added.

Just a few days ago, the Malaysian team withdrew from the 2025 CAFA Cup. This is a tournament with the presence of strong teams from Central Asia and West Asia. Therefore, the Malaysian team not participating in this tournament makes them lose the opportunity to practice with quality matches.

The reason why Malaysia withdrew from the CAFA Cup was because naturalized Malaysian players could not participate in this tournament.

This makes Malaysian football legend Datuk Jamal Nasir even more fed up with the way the Malaysian team is currently run.

“Harimau Malaya is too dependent on naturalised players, which exposes structural flaws in the Malaysian team,” commented Datuk Jamal Nasir.

“Even the decision of the Malaysian team to withdraw from the CAFA Cup was not made by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) officials or the director of the national team, but was arbitrarily announced by head coach Peter Cklamovski.

There is something going on in the management of the Malaysian team that I still don't understand," Datuk Jamal Nasir continued.

According to this expert, when naturalized players cannot participate in the CAFA Cup, FAM should give opportunities to domestic players, not choose to withdraw.

The Malaysian football legend said: “When receiving the invitation to participate in the CAFA Cup, FAM should have sat down and planned carefully, whether the Malaysian team was ready to participate in this tournament or not? Would the naturalized players return to the national team or not, to come up with a plan to replace them?”

“On the other hand, the Malaysian national team is completely passive due to the lack of naturalized players. Harimau Malaya is probably managed by only a few individuals. The structure of the national team is clearly in trouble,” said Malaysian football legend Datuk Jamal Nasir.
