David Luiz helped Pafos get their first point in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League season. |
In the 26th minute, the turning point came when Pafos striker Bruno received a second yellow card for fouling Lorenzo Pirola, forcing the visitors from Cyprus to play 10 vs 11 in the League Phase match, Champions League on the evening of September 17. It seemed that this would be a ticket for Olympiakos to impose the game, but everything went according to the opposite scenario.
Throughout the match, the Greek representative launched 18 shots, of which only 3 were on target, but not once did the ball go past goalkeeper Neofytos Michail. Main striker Ayoub El Kaabi had the clearest chance early in the second half with a header that went wide of the post.
Meanwhile, Mehdi Taremi almost caused an imbalance in the match when he was shown a red card in the 70th minute, but VAR intervened and downgraded the card to a yellow card.
Pafos, in their first Champions League group stage appearance, put in a valiant defensive display. Despite only having 32% possession and just six shots, they repeatedly thwarted Olympiakos’ relentless attacks, especially in the final minutes when Christos Mouzakitis and Taremi were desperate for a goal.
The 0-0 draw saw Olympiakos miss out on an early lead in the group, while Pafos left Piraeus with a historic scoreline, marked by a resilient defensive performance against the suffocating pressure from the Greek giants.
