In 2024, Vietnam's durian export turnover will increase 7.8 times compared to 2022, accounting for nearly 50% of the total fruit and vegetable export value, mainly thanks to high demand from the Chinese market.
On January 8, CNBC reported that Vietnam has become a new “giant” in the global durian market, with an export value of 3.3 billion USD by 2024.
According to reports from investors, Vietnam's durian export turnover increased 7.8 times compared to 2022, accounting for nearly 50% of the total export value of vegetables and fruits.
This success is largely due to high demand from the Chinese market, where durian is considered a luxury fruit and innovative ingredient in cuisine .
However, Vietnam is still trying to surpass Thailand to become the largest durian exporter to China.
Specifically, in November 2024, China imported 1.53 million tons of durian worth 6.83 billion USD from fruit orchards around the world , up 9.4% over the previous year. Of which, Vietnam accounted for 47% of the market share in this market, approaching Thailand's leading position.
Durian has become a trend among China's middle class, with innovative products such as durian hotpot, durian bread and durian-themed buffets increasingly attracting consumers.
Vietnam has been quick to seize this opportunity by producing high-quality durian consistently year-round, meeting the demands of the high-end market.
On the other hand, Indonesia is still struggling to catch up. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency of Indonesia (BPS), the country's durian export value in 2023 only reached 1.07 million USD, far below Vietnam's achievements.
Despite growth compared to previous years, Indonesia's durian exports are still not competitive enough in the international market.
CNBC assessed that Vietnam has achieved outstanding success thanks to an overall strategy including improving quality, innovating technology and expanding international markets.
With a durian growing area of up to 150,000 hectares, Vietnam effectively utilizes areas such as the Mekong Delta and highlands to produce high-quality durian all year round.
In addition, Vietnam has signed a strategic trade agreement with China through the 2022 export protocol, committing to ensuring product quality according to strict food safety standards, product tracking and applying modern freezing technology.
In 2024, Vietnam's durian exports are estimated to reach 4.3 billion USD, becoming one of the main drivers of the country's export growth. Vietnam's total export value in 2024 is estimated to increase by 14.3%, reaching 405.53 billion USD.
