How many cancer drugs have been registered for circulation by the Ministry of Health?

To date, Vietnam has about 100 types of drugs and biological products for cancer treatment that have been granted circulation registration certificates.

As reported by Health and Life, in Decision No. 628/QD-QLD dated October 31 signed by Mr. Vu Tuan Cuong - Director of the Department of Drug Administration, Ministry of Health , there are 14 vaccines and biological products that have been granted a registration certificate for circulation in Vietnam with a validity of 3 years - batch 57.

In the list attached to the above decision, there is the drug Pembroria (main active ingredient is Pembrolizumab, content 100mg/4ml) produced by Limited Liability Company "PK-137" (Russia), registered by a facility in the United Arab Emirates.

Pembroria medicine is prepared in the form of a concentrated solution for infusion, with a shelf life of 24 months from the date of manufacture.

Notably, according to information from the drug registration agency, Pembrolizumab has more than 14 indications for different types of cancer (such as lung carcinoma, melanoma, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, renal cell carcinoma, breast cancer...).

The Drug Administration of Vietnam requires that after being granted a drug circulation registration certificate, the company must periodically update the progress of clinical research on phase III immunogenicity monitoring every 3 months from the date of issuance of the drug circulation registration certificate and submit documents to change and update phase III immunogenicity monitoring data when the research period ends.

A representative of the Drug Administration Department said that in addition to the Russian drug mentioned above, Vietnam currently has 99 types of cancer drugs that have been granted circulation registration certificates and are still in effect. Thus, up to now, Vietnam has about 100 drugs and biological products to treat cancer for patients.

According to the Drug Administration of Vietnam, the Russian drug Pembroria has the active ingredient Pembrolizumab registered for circulation for the first time in Vietnam. However, before that, this active ingredient was registered as a generic drug since 2017 in a product of the pharmaceutical company MSD.

"Russia's Pembroria is a monoclonal antibody for cancer treatment, not a new drug. This drug is a similar product to MSD's original reference product, which is still in circulation and treating cancer patients," said a representative of the Drug Administration.

However, according to the representative of the Drug Administration, the addition of the Russian product Pembroria in cancer treatment helps doctors have more choices, and at the same time increases patients' access to drugs in cancer treatment.

According to GLOBOCAN statistics in 2022, in Vietnam there are an estimated 180,480 new cases and 120,184 deaths due to cancer. In particular, leading are breast cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer with the rate of new cases and deaths increasing every year.

Current cancer treatment methods include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted drugs, immunotherapy... and new generation drugs.
