Girl earns millions of dong by making unique cakes.

“Many people ask what I do these days, and I tell them I sell cakes online from home. Immediately, many acquaintances and friends are surprised: ‘You studied so hard and then you go sell cakes.’ They don’t know that baking brings me 10 times the income I earned when I worked in an office,” said Hoai Thuong.

Dang Nguyen Hoai Thuong (30 years old), residing on Bui Dinh Tuy Street, Ward 24, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, has been selling cakes for 3 years. Previously, she graduated from the Environmental Management department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. After that, she worked in an office in Tan Phu District for about 2 months. During this time, she felt that the job was not suitable for her, so she quit and switched to selling cakes online.

"During the pandemic, I was bored at home, so I bought an oven to try baking breakfast bread, and then I joined baking groups online. I stumbled upon a post by a woman who made decorated cakes. I was so fascinated that I decided to learn so that one day I could make beautiful cakes like hers. Seeing how passionate I was, my boyfriend (now husband) encouraged me, motivated me, and sponsored me with money to buy ingredients," she shared.

Ms. Thuong taught herself by researching online, but despite her best efforts, she couldn't make a beautiful sponge cake. Sometimes the top was sunken, sometimes the bottom was... She used over 500 eggs, not to mention sugar, milk, and flour. Every day, upon waking up, Ms. Thuong was determined to bake the perfect sponge cake.

Later, she was fortunate enough to meet some friends who were passionate about baking, and they enthusiastically guided and taught her. Eventually, she succeeded in making cakes. Not stopping there, she also taught herself how to draw letters, shapes, make flowers, and sculpt animals on cakes. Each step required meticulous attention to detail and perseverance.

"In the beginning, nobody knew I was baking except my husband. When my family found out, they were very suspicious because I was very clumsy before, breaking everything I touched. After a while, everyone saw that I found joy in my work and had a stable income, so they stopped trying to stop me," she continued.

According to her, cakes should not only be delicious but also beautiful. Quality must be the top priority. Moreover, customers nowadays pay more attention to appearance than before. Some cakes only need 5-10 minutes to decorate, while others take 8-10 hours. However, she doesn't give up. Whatever decoration style a customer requests, she tries her best to do it well, constantly improving her skills. As a result, her cakes, featuring animal shapes and portraits, are well-received by many customers, including some managers of artists.

Once, rapper HIEUTHUHAI ordered a special cake shaped like a catfish with missing teeth and a pouty lip to give to artist Le Duong Bao Lam. To make this cake, Ms. Thuong looked at many pictures, then visualized and sketched the design. Ms. Thuong used sugar candy to create the sharp image, a step that took about 20 minutes. Other steps such as smoothing, color matching, decorating around the cake, and writing the message were completed in about 10-20 minutes. Unexpectedly, this cake went viral online, with fans showering it with likes.

Currently, she makes an average of 5-10 cakes per day. A simple cake costs between 300,000 and 800,000 VND, while more expensive, high-end cakes cost between 1 and 2 million VND. Some cakes are even more expensive, depending on the customer's request.

"I feel that selling cakes is the best decision I've made so far. I think that the profession chooses the person. Every morning, waking up and just being able to bake cakes makes for a wonderful day. Now, I no longer wish I'd win the lottery so I wouldn't have to go to work like before," she confided.

Ms. Thuong does not encourage anyone to drop out of school or to study just to get a degree. Everyone has different circumstances, goals, and passions. If you still have the ability to study, you should study to the best of your ability.

"I switched to making cakes, but that doesn't mean I stopped learning. On the contrary, I had to learn and explore the craft on my own a lot. I made countless mistakes, and I kept learning from them to improve and bring higher quality products to my customers," she said with a smile.
