Teacher loses job for hitting student with plastic ruler, Department of Education and Training says 'the school has jurisdiction'

A chemistry teacher at Anh Hung Nup High School, To Tung Commune (Gia Lai) had her labor contract terminated by the Principal for using a ruler to hit a student's hand for not being able to do the exercise.

On November 12, the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province confirmed that the Principal of Anh Hung Nup High School, To Tung commune, had terminated the labor contract with teacher PTHB, a contract chemistry teacher at this school.

The decision was made by the school principal after a video of Ms. B. using a ruler to hit a student's hand went viral on social media.

Accordingly, the incident occurred on November 3 and 5 during a chemistry class in class 10A. During class, teacher B. called a number of students to the board to do exercises. Students who answered incorrectly or did not do their exercises would line up and be hit on the hand multiple times by the teacher with a plastic ruler.

After receiving the information, on November 8, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quan, the school principal, invited Ms. B. to work and asked her to write a report. At the same time, he organized a meeting with the parents of the 10A students.

At the meeting, Ms. B. reported the incident and admitted her mistake to the school leadership and the parents. The parents said that Ms. B.'s behavior stemmed from her love and concern for the students, but due to her lack of experience in handling the situation, it led to an unwanted incident.

After the meeting, 14/15 parents asked Ms. B. to visit each student's parents' home to apologize and agree to let Ms. B. continue teaching.

The school leaders expressed their opinion that they would hold a school council meeting to resolve the issue and notify parents and students of the entire school of the results after the meeting.

On November 10, during the flag salute, the school principal publicly apologized to all students and through the students apologized to their parents. Afterwards, the school held a council meeting and decided to terminate Ms. B's teaching contract as of November 10.

On November 12, Tuoi Tre Online reporter tried to contact the phone number of the school principal and teacher PTHB to find out about the incident, but received no response.

What did the leaders of Gia Lai Department of Education and Training say?

Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province, said that Ms. B. is a contract teacher, recruited by the school, so the authority to handle personnel matters belongs to the school.

In this case, Mr. Long said that Ms. B's actions violated educational regulations, high school regulations, and violated the student's body. Therefore, regardless of the severity of the impact, Ms. B violated educational regulations and the terms of the labor contract signed with the school at the time of recruitment.

"Each student has a different personality, so they need different forms of education to suit them and have the support of their family and society. But in all forms of education, teachers must avoid forms that are not in the regulations. They must not implement educational measures that do not comply with regulations and are not allowed by the charter. In Ms. B's case, it can be considered an occupational accident!" - Mr. Long shared.
