Early last December, an unexpected event struck my family. The whole family was shocked when the doctor informed me that my father had prostate cancer.
Almost as a tradition, every year our extended family takes a photo on the first day of Tet - Photo: CHUNG THANH HUY
On the day of the surgery, although on the surface we were always smiling and joking to make Dad happy, inside my sisters and I were all confused. Because Dad was old and there were always many unpredictable situations in surgery. But Dad reassured and encouraged us. He said: "Don't worry, I'm fine. Have the surgery and stay healthy so you can celebrate Tet!"
Thanks to God, the surgery that lasted more than 2 hours ended well. My father's health recovered faster so he was discharged early. On the day of the follow-up visit, the doctor congratulated the whole family because the SPA index had returned to a stable level so my father did not have to undergo radiation therapy, chemotherapy or take medicine. Emotions were overwhelming after long days of being suppressed by so many worries.
As soon as we got back to our hometown, the whole family stopped by the flower market to choose the most suitable flower pots to decorate the house. Dad picked another pair of kumquats to display and then after Tet, he grafted a new variety.
Sister Hai texted the family group chat: "This Tet is mainly about having fun, the simpler the better, everyone!". Just a few minutes later, everyone gave hearts or gave both hands in support. Because after a year with many changes, just wishing for the whole family to be together is already such a blessing.
So it was not until December 27 that my family started preparing for Tet. Even though last year one of my younger siblings lost his business and one of my grandchildren lost his job before Tet. Not to mention that many people’s salaries and bonuses also decreased. But in the end, the moments of reunion with grandparents and parents when the year ends and Tet begins are priceless.
With that "special" Tet, my sisters and I have just realized over the years that because we always want Tet to be full and complete, sometimes the spring days become a burden for some people or make others feel awkward.
Tet is for reunion, gathering, resting, recharging, having fun... Each person has different needs and ways of utilizing Tet holiday time, as long as it does not affect others. So do not force others to think like you, to do as you wish during the spring days.
If we can still hear our father scolding and our mother blaming us every time we return home for Tet, it means we are still extremely happy because so many people no longer have that.
Open your heart to see that the family reunion dinner is the most precious gift we are lucky to have.
As long as there is father and mother, there is spring.
