There has been much speculation about Mr Kaesang's political prospects, after the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) put up a poster promoting him as Depok mayor in May.
In a video posted on June 10 on his official YouTube channel, Mr. Kaesang announced his readiness to become mayor of Depok.
Mr. Kaesang first showed interest in politics during a family meal in January. At that time, President Jokowi said that he did not interfere in the decision-making process and always let his children work freely because they had their own families.
Thus, Mr. Kaesang is the third member of President Jokowi's family to run for public office. Previously, Mr. Kaesang's brother, Mr. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and brother-in-law Bobby Nasution ran and were elected mayors of Surakarta and Medan in the 2020 local elections.
Previously, Mr Kaesang seemed to be aiming to run for mayor of Surakarta or Sleman in Central Java province, while Mr Gibran would run for governor of Central Java.
However, with the latest announcement, Mr. Kaesang has decided to choose a location closer to the capital Jakarta, where Mr. Jokowi was governor before being elected president.
Indonesia is scheduled to hold nationwide local elections in November 2024, about nine months after presidential and legislative elections in February.
