Google Photos is about to add a new set of tools called Touch Up, allowing users to fine-tune many details on the face such as lips, nose, eyebrows, teeth or the area under the eyes. This is considered an important step in applying artificial intelligence to editing portrait photos on mobile devices.
According to information previously discovered by Android Authority in the source code and now successfully activated, Touch Up has now appeared in Google Photos version 7.56.0.839465534. However, many devices are still stuck at version 7.55, so this feature has not reached all users.
With the Touch Up update, users can choose from six editing tools including: Skin Smoothing, Under Eye Correction, Iris Brightening, Teeth Whitening, Eyebrow Correction, and Lip Correction. Each option has a slider to adjust the level of change, allowing users to control the details of each edit as desired. Simply select the area of the face that needs to be improved, drag the intensity slider, and save when satisfied.
Notably, Touch Up is able to recognize and edit each face in a group photo. The tool will process each person separately instead of applying the effect to the entire photo, helping to maintain naturalness and accuracy. According to the test, Google Photos supports editing up to six faces in a photo. If there are more people, the application will notify and not allow selection beyond the limit.
To use Touch Up, users need to access the Actions tab in the photo editor. The first time the feature is launched, Google Photos will ask to download a 16MB machine learning model. Once completed, Touch Up will be ready to edit.
While Google has not yet announced a public release date, the gap between the beta versions suggests the feature is very close to its official release. However, the level of user acceptance is still a question mark. Many people believe that using AI to change faces can make photos look less realistic. On the contrary, some users welcome any tool that makes photos look better without spending too much time editing.
An interesting question also arises: should photographers notify their subjects when they use Touch Up to alter their appearance? If the photos are for personal storage, this may not be important. But if you share photos with the people in them, disclosure is necessary to ensure respect and transparency.
Despite the controversy, Touch Up is definitely one of the most notable upgrades to Google Photos in recent times, promising to bring a more powerful and intuitive portrait editing experience to users.
