What tax debt results in a temporary travel ban?

According to Government Decree 49/2025/ND-CP, which stipulates the threshold for applying temporary exit bans and takes effect from February 28, 2025, the following cases of tax arrears will be subject to temporary exit bans:

- Individuals and business owners with tax debts of 50 million VND or more, and whose tax debts have been overdue for more than 120 days.

- Individuals who are the legal representatives of enterprises, cooperatives, or cooperative unions with tax debts of VND 500 million or more, and whose tax debts have been overdue for more than 120 days.

- Individuals engaged in business, business owners, and individuals who are legal representatives of enterprises, cooperatives, or cooperative unions that are no longer operating at their registered address, and who have outstanding tax debts that are overdue according to regulations, and who have not fulfilled their tax obligations after 30 days from the date the tax authorities notify them of the temporary travel ban.

- Vietnamese citizens who emigrate to settle abroad, Vietnamese citizens residing abroad, and foreigners who, before departing from Vietnam, have outstanding tax debts that are overdue and have not yet fulfilled their tax obligations.

Check the status of your temporary travel ban due to tax arrears on the Tax Department's website.

To check if you are subject to a temporary travel ban due to outstanding tax debts, please follow these steps:

- Access the website of the Tax Department (under the Ministry of Finance ) here.

- On the website interface that appears, simply fill in the information including your personal tax identification number, document number (ID card number), name of the individual taxpayer, then enter the verification code and click the "Search" button.

From July 1st, 2025, citizens can use their personal identification number, the 12-digit number printed on their Citizen Identity Card (CCCD), instead of their tax identification number in all tax-related activities for individuals, households, and businesses. Therefore, in the "Personal Tax Identification Number" section, you can enter your CCCD number to look it up.

Conversely, if results are displayed, you can click the "View details" button to see the reason for the temporary suspension of your departure.

Check your status regarding temporary travel bans due to tax arrears through the eTax Mobile app.

eTax Mobile is an application developed by the General Department of Taxation, allowing users to check if they have any unpaid or overdue taxes, such as personal income tax, property tax, and business tax.

Users can follow these steps to check if they are among those whose departure is being delayed due to tax debt through the eTax Mobile app.

- Activate the eTax Mobile app on your smartphone and log in to your account. On the app's main interface, scroll down and tap on the "Check notifications" function.
