Uses of guava leaves

The plant known as "Lá mơ" (also called "lây mơ tròn," "dây mơ lông," "mơ tam thể," "mẫu cầu đằng," "ngũ hương đằng," "thanh phong đằng," and "mao hồ lô" is so named because of its unpleasant smell.

Apricot is a perennial climbing vine. The entire plant is covered in soft hairs, especially the stem, branches, and young leaves. Crushed leaves have an unpleasant odor. Young stems are slightly flattened, later becoming round, and are green or purplish-red. Flowering and fruiting occur from August to October. There is a related species with similar uses, differing only in its spherical fruit and purplish-red leaves on the underside; this is called the tricolor apricot. Mountain dwellers also commonly use the wild apricot, a related species with similar uses to the hairy apricot. The wild apricot differs from the above species in that its entire stem is almost smooth, its leaves have a distinctly heart-shaped base, and its flowers are pink.

There are five species of the plant in Vietnam, but the hairy fig tree is the most common. It originates from India and Malaysia. Hairy fig trees can be found in most provinces (except in high mountainous areas above 1,600 m). The leaves are often grown along fences, garden edges, or field edges. In some places, it is cultivated for medicinal purposes. There are two types of hairy fig trees: one with green leaves and the other with tricolor leaves. Hairy fig leaves have a slightly bitter, slightly salty taste, a foul odor, and a cooling effect. They are used to clear heat, detoxify, tighten pores, and disinfect.

Alternatively, take 100 grams each of fresh hairy fig leaves and fresh knotweed, boil them in water until a concentrated decoction is formed, and divide it into several doses to drink throughout the day.

- Treatment for amoebic dysentery and bacillary dysentery : 80g of hairy fig leaves, 150g of fresh knotweed, 30g of large-leaved fig, 16g of betel nut, 12g of stemona root, 8g of fig bark, decoct into a concentrated solution and drink in several doses throughout the day.

- Treatment for dysentery : 20 grams each of hairy fig leaves and buffalo horn leaves, 10 grams each of betel leaves and myrtle buds, decocted and drunk or made into pills, one dose per day. Alternatively, 30 grams of hairy fig leaves, 25 grams of milkweed, 20 grams of purslane, 10 grams each of dried betel nut and mangosteen peel, 5 grams each of Smilax glabra and white peony root, decocted and drunk one dose per day. Or, grind into a powder and take 8 grams three times a day.

- Treatment for bloody diarrhea : 6 grams each of three-colored morning glory leaves, purslane, and pigweed, 15 grams of young shoots of eggplant, and 4 grams of Andrographis paniculata. Boil these ingredients together and drink one decoction daily.

Add to 6 liters of water, mix well, and boil until only 1 liter remains. Divide into 2-3 doses per day.

- Some people also use the hairless green leaves to treat elevated liver enzymes in hepatitis . Each time, use 20-25 grams of fresh leaves, wash them thoroughly, grind them into a paste, and strain to obtain about 250-300 ml of juice. Drink twice a day, morning and evening, for 5-7 consecutive days.
