Germany excludes Huawei from 6G network for security reasons

Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Chinese suppliers such as Huawei will be excluded from the next-generation 6G telecommunications network, in order to ensure national security and strengthen “digital sovereignty ”.

The German government said it will replace components in the 5G network with products produced by itself, while not allowing any components from China to appear in the 6G network.

Europe is increasingly concerned about its dependence on foreign technology, from Asian semiconductor chips to US AI and cloud computing infrastructure, as trade and geopolitical tensions threaten supply chains.

Last year, Germany ordered carriers to remove Huawei equipment from their core 5G networks due to security risks, and Berlin is now considering using public funds to help carriers like Deutsche Telekom replace Chinese equipment.

Elon Musk denies xAI raised $15 billion

CNBC reported that Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI had raised an additional $15 billion in Series E funding, bringing its total funding to $15 billion and valuing the company at $200 billion. However, Musk immediately took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that the information was “false,” and emphasized that this was not the first time he had denied reports of xAI’s fundraising.

In an automated response to Reuters, xAI simply wrote: “Legacy Media Lies,” expressing a strong denial. However, the company is still actively expanding its data infrastructure to train advanced AI models, directly competing with OpenAI and Anthropic. In addition, xAI has invested in the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee.

Despite the controversy, investor interest in the AI sector remains strong, although many experts warn of the risk of an “AI bubble” due to rising valuations and huge infrastructure costs.

Verizon prepares to cut 15,000 jobs

Verizon is expected to cut about 15,000 jobs next week, the largest layoff ever for the telecommunications giant, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company is under intense competition in the mobile and home internet segments. The cuts are aimed at reducing costs and reshaping its development strategy.

In its third-quarter report, Verizon reported a net profit of $5.1 billion and many growth indicators. However, the number of postpaid mobile customers decreased sharply: 7,000 customers were lost compared to an increase of 18,000 in the same period.

The fact that Verizon – one of the world’s leading telecommunications corporations – plans to cut tens of thousands of jobs (most of which will be layoffs, in addition Verizon may convert about 200 stores to a franchise model to reduce the number of direct employees) not only reflects the fierce competitive pressure in the industry, but also shows the company’s strategic change in the context of heavy investment in 5G and digital services. This move can directly affect the labor market, impact investor confidence and shape the development trend of global telecommunications technology.
