In an effort to revitalize rural areas, operators have stepped up the deployment of global telecommunications services, gradually extending 5G and fiber optic connections to remote areas. As a digital infrastructure provider, Huawei has contributed to the digital development of Yunnan Province.

The benefits of this digital build-up can be seen in Yunnan, a largely rural, underdeveloped province in southwestern China. Yunnan’s recipe for success has three key ingredients: ambitious goals, better ICT infrastructure, and a strategic blueprint to focus on the industries and services in which the province has advantages.

“Huawei and local operators have been exploring innovative ways to improve rural coverage and reduce its costs,” said Lei Lei, director of Huawei’s Yunnan telecom carrier business unit.
Heshun Ancient Town in Tengchong City, Yunnan Province is fully covered by 5G network. The high-speed broadband network allows visitors to access better, faster and more convenient services.

With full 5G coverage, creating the necessary infrastructure for Big Data analytics, allowing all connected objects in the Internet of Things to send data to smart platforms for analysis. This brings many benefits to the lives of tourists. Travelers can easily use WeChat mini programs to find directions, buy tickets, locate restaurants, catch buses, and book hotels, among other things.
Furthermore, managing the city in general and the tourist area in particular is extremely easy, the management unit can receive alarms from 50 points across the town to respond to any emergency in real time.

Creating convenience for tourists is also the way Heshun shows here, such as tourists will encounter chairs equipped with solar panels and power outlets and from here comfortably charge smartphones. Or smart water fountains monitor the quality and flow rate of water, ensuring both safe to drink and not wasted...
"Tengchong's tourism industry has unique advantages, especially the applications of technology, bringing more convenience to tourists," said Ms. Chang Zaifei, Deputy Director of the Tengchong Culture and Tourism Bureau.

In addition to bringing digital technology and 5G applications to the famous tourist area, Huawei also brought technology to the coffee growing area in Xinzhai Village, Yunnan Province. A coffee museum and a coffee experience hall have been established here, where people can learn about how coffee is grown, processed, sold and enjoyed, and have attracted about 120,000 tourists each year, making it a tourist village in Yunnan Province.

And here, digital technology plays a key role in the development of “coffee tourism”. Huawei and others have built five 5G base stations to support the development of the coffee industry here. In coffee plantations, IoT sensors can collect meaningful data about coffee cultivation, including temperature, humidity, and soil acidity. By analyzing this data, farmers can grow more efficiently and reap greater economic benefits.
Not only that, together with the network operator China Mobile, they have built private lines for coffee processing factories here to exploit the power of e-commerce, selling online 24/7 with superior network quality.
Digital technology applications, 5G deployment in Heshun Ancient Town or Xinzhai Coffee Village have shown that digital technology can promote rural growth, and Huawei and others are vigorously promoting the application of new technology in this region with the expectation that technology will play a key role in boosting the rural economy.

“Technologies such as 5G, cloud, and AI form the foundation for upgrading rural digital infrastructure. In the coming year and beyond, Yunnan aims to upgrade its digital infrastructure and narrow the digital gap. By continuously pushing other parts of Yunnan to advance in the digital field, it will serve as a model for economic development,” said Ms. Su Ruiping, Director of the Information and Communications Technology Development Department of the Yunnan Provincial Administration.
