The board of directors of technology company Astronomer has launched an internal investigation after a video went viral on social media showing CEO Andy Byron hugging HR director Kristin Cabot at a Coldplay concert.
The incident became a hot topic after the two appeared on a big screen in a "kiss cam" style at Gillette Stadium. The clip showed the couple looking surprised when being projected onto the screen in front of thousands of spectators. Their surprised reaction caused Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin to "fix" them on stage, saying they were a bit too shy.
On social media, the keyword "Andy Byron" quickly became a top Google search trend in the US on July 18. The video attracted tens of millions of views, along with a series of comments and viral memes on X and TikTok. In response to the backlash, Astronomer has disabled the comments section of its company accounts on both LinkedIn and X to limit negative interactions.
Later that evening, the company confirmed that it had launched a formal investigation. At the same time, Astronomer denied that any other employees were in the video and denied that Byron had made the official statement himself.
“The board is reviewing the matter and will share more information in due course. Astronomer leaders are expected to maintain high standards of conduct and accountability,” the company said in a statement.
The incident also had an impact on the over-the-counter market, with more than $250,000 traded on Polymarket in “bets” related to Byron’s ability to continue as CEO.
In response to the public backlash, the company and its senior leaders, including the board of directors and founders, remained silent for more than 24 hours. Astronomer's first CEO, Ry Walker, also confirmed on social media that he would no longer be involved with the company after 2022 and had no information about the incident.
Astronomer, founded in 2015, develops a data management platform with notable clients including Marriott and Activision. It closed a Series D funding round in May. NewsWeek once labeled the company a “unicorn” when it valued it at over $1 billion .
Byron took over as CEO in July 2023 after years of working at major technology companies. He has held leadership roles at Lacework, Cybereason, Fuze, and Aveksa, all of which are software companies with major industry acquisitions.
Meanwhile, Kristin Cabot was appointed Astronomer's Chief Human Resources Officer in November 2024.
