According to information from UNDP, within the framework of the Global Plastic Innovation Programme (GPIP) Phase 2, with support from the Government of Japan, UNDP Vietnam has implemented the research "Assessment of the Plastic Waste Pollution Situation in the Tourism Industry in Vietnam" with the participation and coordination of provincial/city tourism management departments, local tourism associations, and several related partners.

To date, UNDP has developed a draft baseline study report on assessing plastic pollution in the tourism sector and plans to organize a technical consultation workshop to share the report's key findings and gather input from stakeholders, including policymakers, research institutions, and the business community.

Thanking the Vietnam National Tourism Administration for its cooperation in promoting sustainable tourism, aiming to minimize and eventually eliminate plastic waste emissions, the UNDP representative expressed their desire to receive the cooperation of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration in organizing the workshop and respectfully invited the Director of the Administration to co-chair the workshop.

At the meeting, Deputy Director Ha Van Sieu stated that sustainable tourism development is also a policy and orientation of Vietnam's tourism. The Vietnam National Tourism Administration highly appreciated UNDP's research on assessing the plastic waste pollution situation in Ninh Binh and Da Nang , thereby proposing policy recommendations and feasible intervention solutions aimed at minimizing plastic waste in tourism activities in general. Basically agreeing with UNDP's proposals, Deputy Director Ha Van Sieu assigned relevant units of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration to support UNDP in organizing the workshop.

The workshop is scheduled to be held in Ninh Binh on February 5, 2026, with the participation of representatives from state management agencies, associations, and businesses in the accommodation and travel industries.
