Lukaku no longer has a place at Napoli. |
Romelu Lukaku has just left Italy to return to Belgium to continue his injury recovery, a move seen as the end of his turbulent time at Napoli.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport , the Italian club's management has agreed to allow the Belgian striker to train at the Belgian national team's technical center in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
Unlike his unilateral departure from the club in March, which caused internal tension, this move was fully approved by Napoli. Both sides are currently maintaining a professional relationship while awaiting a final solution in the summer transfer market.
Napoli understands that Lukaku remains a valuable asset economically . The Southern Italian club does not want to suffer a significant loss after investing heavily in the striker born in 1993. Therefore, allowing him to recover in a familiar environment is also seen as a way to preserve his transfer value.
Several clubs in the Saudi Pro League and the Turkish Super League are reportedly closely monitoring Lukaku's situation. Napoli hopes to find a club willing to pay the very high salary of the former Chelsea and Inter Milan striker.
Despite his uncertain future, Lukaku still had a memorable time at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. In the 2024/25 season, he scored 14 goals, helping Napoli win the Scudetto and becoming one of the most important players in their attack.
However, everything fell apart in the 2025/26 season. A serious injury sustained last August caused Lukaku to virtually disappear for the entire season. He only played 64 minutes for Napoli in all competitions, with his only notable contribution being a late goal against Verona.
