Press and Business Forum: Dialogue of Development Partners

The 2024 Press and Business Forum for a Prosperous and Happy Vietnam has the theme "Improving the quality of economic and business information in the press".

Press questions

“We always ask for information to be checked from both sides, but businesses are not always ready to answer. That is quite a difficult point in the work of reporters,” said Nguyen Van Ba, Editor-in-Chief of VietNamNet, during a discussion at the Forum on Press and Business Accompanying for a Prosperous and Happy Vietnam in 2024, which took place on the morning of October 24, 2024.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ba, Editor-in-Chief of VietNamNet.

Even when the press exploits information that businesses must disclose, such as information on the purchase and sale of shares by major shareholders of listed companies, many times the companies do not want to be exploited.

The reality is clear, without businesses, without business opinions, the press has no source of information originating from business practices. From this perspective, businesses play the role of readers, information providers and news subjects of the press.

From another perspective, businesses and the press also have a business relationship when using each other's services. Businesses are advertising partners, contributing large amounts of funding to the operations of many press agencies.

“Reporting information about businesses is also a hotly debated topic. Many people say that negative information about businesses in the press can affect the business's operations; but there are also opinions that if the information is not reported or the information is inaccurate, will the people and customers using the business's services be affected more? We try to ensure harmony in reporting information that is considered bad for businesses with the rights and interests of third parties,” Mr. Ba shared at the Forum, with the participation of many businesses, representatives of business associations, in addition to the presence of many leaders of press agencies.

According to Mr. Ba, in the cooperative relationship between the press and businesses, frankness and a positive approach are essential. “If the press has to point out the problems and issues of businesses, it will do so in a positive way, not by finding fault with the businesses. That is how we do it,” Mr. Ba said frankly.

Business concerns

Agreeing with Mr. Ba, Mr. Nguyen Van The, Chairman of the Quang Ninh Province Business Association, affirmed that the press has supported businesses a lot. “When businesses do well, it is difficult to say what they do well, so they need to rely on the press. Thanks to that, information about businesses, products, etc. reaches customers and the market. We are very grateful and appreciate the support of the press,” Mr. The expressed.

Mr. Nguyen Van The, Chairman of Quang Ninh Provincial Business Association.

However, Mr. The wants to send the "true feelings" of the business.

“Many businesses complain about receiving too many calls from the press. Even me, sometimes I get more than ten calls a day. During difficult business times, this is very annoying. But there is also information that businesses want to post, but do not know which newspaper to choose,” Mr. The shared.

This reality makes Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Hang, Vice President of the Vietnam Agricultural Business Council (VCAC), worried that without the support of the press, Vietnamese products and businesses will be "lonely" right at home.

“Temu has started entering Vietnam, with huge discounts, selling directly from Chinese businesses to Vietnamese consumers. If information and brands of Vietnamese businesses are not promoted, manufacturing businesses will really face difficulties,” Ms. Hang worried.

She even wants to raise a bigger issue with the press, which is that not putting Vietnamese products on the shelves is a failure of Vietnam. “We need to have a common goal of supporting Vietnamese businesses. Wherever Vietnamese products and Vietnamese brands go, the strength of Vietnam spreads there,” Ms. Hang shared.

Looking for ways to cooperate

“If we only think of the press as a channel to advertise products and services, or as a nuisance, then this relationship will be very awkward,” Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, emphasized at the Forum.

The Forum "Press and Business Forum for a Prosperous and Happy Vietnam 2024" was organized by VCCI in coordination with the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Vietnam Journalists Association.

With the recent development of social media, there are many other options for promoting brands and spreading information. Of course, the mainstream information is still the press.

However, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam said that for many years now, the press team has had to carry out political and missionary duties in an increasingly difficult economic situation when the old business model of the press is undergoing many changes.

“In order for the press and businesses to work together for a prosperous and happy Vietnam, all parties need to find a solution to redefine the press-business relationship on a more solid and transparent foundation to increase expectations for each other,” Mr. Lam emphasized.

At the same time, the press and businesses need to coordinate to enhance social responsibility by jointly supporting the provision of good products and services, in which information provision services are also services that need proper investment to have high-quality products.

Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Mr. Le Quoc Minh, called "the relationship between the press and businesses a relationship of both criticism and mutual support and attachment."

However, Mr. Minh analyzed that many articles about businesses still lack depth and in-depth analysis of business activities, leading to incomplete and sometimes incorrect information about businesses to the market. The press has not yet fully exploited its potential in supporting businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises. Building a sustainable cooperative relationship between the press and businesses still faces many difficulties, affecting the effectiveness of information and propaganda work.

Meanwhile, due to the many other ways to reach users, many businesses gradually underestimate the role of the press, even "forgetting" the press in brand communication campaigns. In fact, if the mainstream press encounters difficulties and is weakened, the businesses themselves will be significantly affected.

Therefore, Mr. Minh expressed his opinion that the press and businesses need to cooperate and coordinate with each other to find the most satisfactory connection methods.

This is also the goal of the Business and Press Forum. Chairman of the Vietnam Federation of Industry and Commerce (VCCI), Mr. Pham Tan Cong emphasized this. This year's forum chose the theme "Improving the quality of economic and business information in the press" with the aim of having business representatives and journalists discuss the issue of cooperation and companionship between two forces that play a very important role in building and developing the economy. The common goal is for the development of the country.

According to the Chairman of VCCI, the media and press environment is also part of the overall business environment in Vietnam.

“A healthy media and press environment that both disseminates information and knowledge about economics and business activities and encourages and motivates the entrepreneurial spirit in society is a key requirement and the foundation to promote the development of businesses, inspire entrepreneurship in society, and contribute to the country's economic growth,” the Chairman of VCCI emphasized.

This is the second time the Forum has been organized by VCCI in coordination with the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Vietnam Journalists Association.
