As many as 22 commercial banks increased their charter capital in 2025, contributing to raising the total charter capital of the entire industry (excluding 4 banks that were compulsorily transferred) to over 985,685 billion VND, equivalent to approximately 38 billion USD.
In terms of percentage, National Commercial Bank (NCB) achieved the most impressive increase in charter capital, reaching 63.67% compared to the end of 2024. From a bank with a small capital base, NCB's charter capital has now reached VND 19,280 billion, completing its capital increase plan one year ahead of schedule compared to the bank's restructuring plan.
Thus, NCB has completed its third consecutive capital increase within four years (2022-2025), meeting and fully complying with the operational safety indicators as stipulated in Circular No. 41/2016/TT-NHNN on capital adequacy ratios for credit institutions.
KienlongBank, MB, Viet A Bank, and VietBank are also among the banks that have increased their charter capital most significantly, with increases ranging from 50% to 59% compared to the end of 2024.
Among them, Military Bank (MB) rose to second place in the Vietnamese credit institution system in terms of charter capital. As of December 31, 2025, MB's charter capital reached VND 80,550 billion, a sharp increase of 51.80%, equivalent to an increase of VND 27,486 billion.
In absolute terms, MB also ranks second among banks that have increased their charter capital most significantly over the past year.
Meanwhile, Vietcombank was the bank that increased its capital the most, in absolute terms, becoming the bank with the largest charter capital in the system with capital reaching over 83,556 billion VND.
In addition, VietinBank also achieved a very strong increase in charter capital last year, with an additional 24,000 billion VND to 77,669 billion VND.
After a year without issuing additional shares to increase capital, VPBank has lost its position as the bank with the largest charter capital to Vietcombank. With a charter capital of over 79,000 billion VND, VPBank currently ranks third in the entire system in terms of charter capital size.
However, VPBank still holds the number one position among private banks in terms of chartered capital.
It can be seen that all four leading banks (Vietcombank, MB, VPBank, and VietinBank) have charter capital even larger than the combined charter capital of the ten banks below them.
Other banks with charter capital exceeding 70 trillion VND include Techcombank (70,800 billion VND) and BIDV (70,200 billion VND).
Meanwhile, after the National Assembly approved a capital increase in 2024, Agribank's charter capital remains at VND 51,600 billion, ranking 7th in the entire system.
ACB and HDBank come next with charter capital of VND 51,400 billion and VND 50,000 billion respectively.
The group of 16 banks with charter capital reaching billions of USD also includes SHB, VIB, MSB, LPBank, SeABank, TPBank, and OCB.
It can be seen that many commercial banks have planned to increase their charter capital in 2026, including those that just increased their capital in 2025.
In particular, SHB Bank recently increased its capital by 25% to VND 46,000 billion, but still announced plans to increase its charter capital to VND 53,442 billion through the offering/issuance of 750 million shares to existing shareholders, professional investors, and employees.
Despite a recent 51% increase, Viet A Bank remains a relatively small bank (8,100 billion VND). In the fourth quarter of this year, the State Bank of Vietnam officially approved Viet A Bank's second capital increase for 2025, through the issuance of shares to existing shareholders and an ESOP program for employees. Upon completion, the bank's charter capital is expected to reach 11,495 billion VND, an increase of over 3,331 billion VND compared to the current level.
Similarly, ABBank has also recently received approval from the State Bank of Vietnam to increase its charter capital by more than VND 3,600 billion (equivalent to a 35% increase). This includes increasing capital through the issuance of share purchase rights to existing shareholders and the issuance of shares to employees. The total projected charter capital of ABBank after the increase is VND 13,973 billion.
The banks' race to increase their charter capital is to support their business operations and allocate funds to various banking activities.
Increasing charter capital also lays the groundwork for banks to enhance their financial capacity, improve their capital adequacy ratio (CAR), continue expanding their business operations, invest in facilities and technological infrastructure, and develop service quality; thereby strengthening their ability to supply capital to the economy.
