On the evening of May 17, at Lam Son Theater (Thanh Hoa City), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism , Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, Department of Performing Arts, Vietnam Stage Artists Association, Thanh Hoa Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism jointly organized the closing ceremony of the "National Cheo, Tuong and Folk Opera Actor Talent Competition - 2023".

Attending the closing ceremony on the Central side were comrades: Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Head of the Competition Steering Committee; representatives of the Central Mass Mobilization Committee; a number of agencies and units under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

On the side of Thanh Hoa province, there were comrades: Dao Xuan Yen, member of the Standing Committee, Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department; Dau Thanh Tung, member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Deputy Head of the Competition Steering Committee; representatives of a number of provincial departments, branches and organizations.

At the closing ceremony, the Jury awarded the prizes for the “National Cheo Actor Talent Competition - 2023”. Taking place from May 11 to 16, the competition attracted 14 public Cheo art units to participate with 63 excerpts from traditional Cheo to modern Cheo performed by 73 participating actors.

According to the Jury, the most encouraging sign in the "National Cheo Actor Talent Competition - 2023" is that the artistic quality of the 14 units is quite even, each participating actor tries his best to perform his best in the competition.

On the stage of Lam Son Theater, the audience and fellow artists had moments of “full ears” with many soulful, lyrical and poignant Cheo voices such as Dao Lieu, Sa Rẻ Khẻ, Quân tử vu dich,…, of female characters such as Chin, Scholar or flirtatious, passionate like Cam Gia, Binh Thao by female character Thi Mau, indignant and sad like Dam Chan…, humorous and cheerful in the melody of Ba Chua Con Cua, Hat Sua… bearing the distinct mark and nuances of each Cheo art unit and Cheo region in the country. Or, the characters in modern Cheo excerpts such as Cu Huong (excerpt from Mot tin buon), Hieu (excerpt from Nguoi me mot mat, Vo chong thuyen cai)…; along with many Cheo characters exploiting historical themes such as the Minister of Justice and especially the character of the Old Clown - the Cheo play "Ly Nhan Tong's Succession" - an outstanding "phenomenon" of creative and learned inheritance of tradition has appeared fresh on stage, demonstrating the skill of perception as well as the level, ability to create, transform, and inherit character models.

Most of the contest entries are elaborately staged, the actors are sublimated on stage with their profession to fully express their talents, creating impressive artistic highlights, contributing to preserving the Cheo cultural identity. That makes the Cheo art form always go smoothly in the flow of national culture, which is very necessary in Cheo stage art works today.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Head of the Competition Steering Committee emphasized: The 2023 National Cheo, Tuong and Folk Drama Talent Competition took place from May 6 to May 16, 2023 in the land of Thanh Hoa, a land of talented people, through 11 days and nights of performance and competition. The participating artists and actors demonstrated and displayed their artistic talents, bringing to the audience who love traditional art many emotions, colorful perspectives and deep impressions not only about traditional stage art, but also many valuable historical and cultural values of the Vietnamese people.

The National Cheo, Tuong and Folk Drama Talent Competition - 2023 has ended, leaving a good impression in the hearts of participating artists, actors and the public who love traditional arts. This is an extremely important competition, on the one hand, discovering new talents for timely training and development; on the other hand, it is an opportunity for theaters and art troupes to re-evaluate the actor force, on that basis, build high-quality plays in the future.

Through the Competition, it is also an opportunity for state management agencies to evaluate and recognize the vitality of traditional theater among the people, promptly have positive solutions to preserve, maintain and continue to promote the good values of the nation's traditional theater art.

This is also an opportunity for units, Cheo, Tuong and Folk Opera Theaters to exchange, learn and introduce the unique and rich artistic values of their units to other units in particular and Thanh Hoa audiences as well as the whole country in general.

Besides the successes of the competitions and excerpts that were invested in carefully in terms of script, staging, and skillful techniques of the artists and actors in singing and acting, there are still some excerpts and competitions that have not been invested in or paid serious attention to, whether for subjective or objective reasons. Therefore, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism suggested that in the upcoming competitions, the agencies and functional units in charge of art units and theaters with artists and actors participating in this competition should continue to pay attention to, nurture, and train young and talented artists and actors to be the next generation.

Through the Competition, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism also requested the Department of Performing Arts to actively research and advise on mechanisms and policies to improve the treatment regime for artists and actors in the fields of literature and art in general and traditional stage arts in particular in the coming time; especially mechanisms, policies and treatment regimes for attracting, searching, training and promoting young talented artists and actors of the country's traditional stage arts. Urgently open training courses to improve performance techniques for actors to preserve the ancient values of traditional drama; develop projects and order plays for traditional theaters and art troupes nationwide; continue to perfect the competition regulations and organization methods so that the competitions are organized better and better, finding more talents for traditional arts.
