The former Olympia runner-up, once famous, has returned to Vietnam many times to seek opportunities to contribute.

Professor Nguyen Thanh Vinh, from the University of New South Wales (Australia), hopes to return to Vietnam to seek opportunities for collaboration, even free collaboration, with domestic universities.

At a meeting of overseas Vietnamese scientists and entrepreneurs organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology on February 6th, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh, runner-up of the first season of the "Road to Olympia" competition and recently ranked among the most influential researchers in Australia, stated that the purpose of his return to Vietnam this time was to seek opportunities for cooperation with domestic universities.

This is not the first time the professor of organic chemistry has sought opportunities to collaborate with domestic educational institutions. Previously, he has returned to Vietnam many times, meeting with institutes and universities with an open mind, ready to contribute his expertise and experience accumulated after many years working in an international environment. However, to date, everything has remained at the exchange stage, with no concrete cooperation yet.

"The mechanism is already in place, but perhaps we lack trust, openness, and frank conversations with each other. I've traveled extensively and found that sometimes, simply meeting in person or exchanging a few emails is enough to initiate cooperation," he said.

According to Mr. Vinh, many Vietnamese scientists abroad also want to return and contribute to their homeland, because they still carry within them a love for their country and want to contribute to Vietnam in one way or another.

Therefore, the biggest obstacle is not the issue of salary or benefits. "We are ready to start working immediately, and we can even implement it for free, but the important thing is goodwill and the ability to implement it quickly in practice, rather than just stopping at meetings," he emphasized.

He also argued that collaboration doesn't necessarily have to be "grand gestures," and can begin with a short course, a training program, or a joint research project. According to him, the core principle is for both sides to listen to, support, and respect each other's academic individuality.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh was the runner-up in the 2000 Road to Olympia competition and a silver medalist at the International Chemistry Olympiad. He is also known to audiences for his role as Nam in the film The Sky Ahead.

He studied Industrial Chemistry at the University of New South Wales from 2001. In 2010, he was granted special admission to postgraduate studies due to his outstanding academic achievements. After successfully defending his doctoral thesis in Australia, he worked on organic catalysis at the RWTH Aachen Institute of Organic Chemistry (Germany). Currently, he is a professor at the University of New South Wales.
