Rescue of pontoon bridge across Ta Trach river swept away by flood into 3 sections

On the morning of December 9, after replacing and upgrading the system of barrels used as buoys to support the bridge deck, the crew continued to reinforce the iron frame of the bridge; reconnecting the sections of La Khe Trem pontoon bridge (connecting the two banks of Ta Trach river in Kim Long ward, Hue city) that were swept away by flood at the end of October, to soon put this bridge back into operation.

Mr. Vo Duc Hai (Kim Long ward, Hue city), one of the people who contributed capital to build and manage the pontoon bridge across Ta Trach river, said that after the flood receded, he and everyone hired a vehicle to pull the section of bridge that was swept away by the flood back to its original location for repair, serving people's travel.

According to research, people in Dinh Mon, Kim Ngoc, Son Tho, and La Khe Trem villages, in Kim Long ward, used to live like an island, having to take dangerous ferries to cross the river.

In 2012, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province (now Hue City People's Committee) allowed the installation of a pontoon bridge on the Ta Trach River. The bridge was put into use in 2013, helping to shorten the time and ensure safety for people.

Efforts to repair and upgrade the pontoon bridge across Ta Trach River after it was swept away by floodwaters

This pontoon bridge across Ta Trach River is 160m long, 2.5m wide, with a construction cost of nearly 3 billion VND invested and exploited by the people.

The bridge is designed with a system of floating barrels underneath, the bridge surface is lined with thick iron plates, and both sides have protective railings, allowing people and motorbikes to pass.

However, on October 27 and 28, due to the impact of historic floods, the pontoon bridge's anchoring cables were broken by the flood, sweeping the longest section downstream, and running aground in the Tuan market area, Thuy Xuan ward, nearly 1km from its original location.

On average, about 1,500 people travel through La Khe Trem pontoon bridge every day. Since the bridge was washed away by floodwaters, people, including hundreds of students and teachers, have had to travel to Tuan bridge (more than 1km from the pontoon bridge) and other roads with heavy traffic to get to school every day, which is very dangerous.

The leader of Kim Long Ward People's Committee said that according to the documents provided by the investor, La Khe Trem pontoon bridge has been in operation since 2013 and has been permitted to operate by Hue City People's Committee and relevant departments.

Kim Long Ward has requested the investor of the pontoon bridge to absolutely ensure the safety of people's lives and property during operation and be responsible before the law for any incidents that arise.
