Veterans visit the mudless eel and frog farming model of veteran Le Thi Huong in O Mon ward.
The Veterans Association of Truong Khanh commune proactively advised the local Party Committee and government to organize propaganda among local people to avoid planting a third rice crop to prevent the impact of saltwater intrusion; at the same time, they researched models suitable for climate change and saltwater intrusion so that veteran members and farmers could switch to crops that adapt to climate change. The Veterans Association of the commune mobilized its members to participate in building models of growing vegetables at the foot of rice fields, such as cucumbers, gourds, pumpkins, eggplants, herbs, etc. Veteran members applied automatic irrigation methods, saving water and reducing labor, thus increasing income on the same area of land.
In addition, the Veterans Association of Truong Khanh commune has acted as a bridge to facilitate the sale of products between farmers and businesses; and introduced members to access capital from policy credit programs to develop production and business. The Veterans Association of the commune has coordinated with the People's Committee and the power company to consider and support electricity for production for member households applying automatic irrigation methods.
Mr. Luong Thanh Luan, Chairman of the Veterans Association of the commune, said: "Currently, the commune's Veterans Association has many members who are doing business effectively from the model of growing vegetables at the foot of the rice fields. Through these models, the lives of the veterans continue to improve, with 15 out of 18 veterans escaping poverty sustainably."
In O Mon ward, according to Mr. Pham Ngoc Thuan, Chairman of the Ward's Veterans Association, the association's officials and members have actively developed effective economic models such as beekeeping, raising king cobras, eels, and frogs; cultivating water lilies combined with fish farming; growing high-quality plums; and growing durian... The Ward's Veterans Association has established 3 economic cooperatives; supported members and residents in borrowing capital from the Social Policy Bank with a total outstanding loan of over 27.2 billion VND to develop production and business; and mobilized support for members to repair and build 12 houses with a total amount of 600 million VND. To date, the Ward's Veterans Association no longer has any impoverished members.
During the 2022-2025 period, the city's Veterans Association at all levels implemented many effective and innovative approaches to help veteran members and the people improve their lives, such as: training and transferring scientific and technical knowledge in livestock farming and crop cultivation; organizing field conferences, workshops, and visits to effective economic models, cooperatives, and production groups run by veterans... At the same time, they proactively developed and replicated suitable production models and methods, such as: "Large-scale model fields," "Shrimp-Rice," "VAC," "VACR"... City veterans also improved their lives by utilizing vacant land around their homes to grow vegetables, fruits, and raise chickens and ducks... Annually, the percentage of veteran members achieving the title of "Excellent Producer and Businessperson" at all levels met and exceeded the set targets.
With the support of the Veterans Association, businesses, cooperatives, and farms owned by veterans have overcome difficulties, ensured production, and created jobs for workers; actively participated in charitable activities; and strictly complied with legal regulations on environmental protection, food safety and hygiene, and occupational safety. These veteran-owned businesses have also created many jobs for veterans and their children; supported the construction of houses for veterans facing housing difficulties; and provided scholarships to students who are children or grandchildren of veteran members…
The city's Veterans Association branches have leveraged resources and the attention of Party committees, government agencies, the Fatherland Front, and other organizations and individuals to implement poverty reduction programs, support and assist each other in production and business, and help them rise to legitimate wealth, contributing to socio-economic development in the locality. To date, the city's Veterans Association branches have helped 543 veteran households escape poverty and 644 veteran households escape near-poverty, achieving the targets set in the resolution for the 2022-2025 period.
