On May 3, Dr. Nguyen Trung Duong, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, said that the CT scan results showed that the patient had a tumor in the small intestine. Doctors diagnosed lower gastrointestinal bleeding suspected to be due to a jejunal tumor. The patient was indicated for laparoscopic surgery to resect the small intestine.
The surgery went smoothly, the patient recovered quickly and was discharged after 5 days, without needing any additional blood transfusions.
Gastrointestinal bleeding due to small bowel tumors is a rare cause.
According to Dr. Duong, gastrointestinal bleeding is a condition in which blood flows out of the blood vessels into the digestive tract. They are discharged from the digestive tract by vomiting or passing blood or black stools. Bleeding can originate from many different causes, each cause of the disease has a different treatment method. However, gastrointestinal bleeding due to small intestine tumors is a rare cause and is easily missed in diagnosis.
"There are causes of acute gastrointestinal bleeding that require emergency treatment. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening. Therefore, when detecting abnormal signs such as prolonged abdominal pain, fatigue, black stools, dark red stools, bright red stools... people need to visit specialized medical facilities early for appropriate and timely treatment," Dr. Duong recommended.
