At Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital, test results showed many abnormal disorders: increased liver enzymes, increased blood urea and creatinine, urine with red blood cells, white blood cells, ultrasound showed many kidney stones.
Previously, the patient had given birth 6 times, all at home. About a month ago, the patient started having red urine but did not receive any examination or treatment.
At the Department of Obstetrics, Dien Bien General Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with: 32 weeks pregnant, 7th child, severe preeclampsia, increased liver enzymes, kidney stones. The pregnant woman was closely monitored, treated with antihypertensive drugs, placed a bladder catheter and continuously monitored the fetal heart rate with an obstetric monitor. By 6 p.m. on December 1, the fetal heart rate was slow, with poor internal oscillation.
The on-duty team invited the on-duty doctor, the leader and doctors from the Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia and Surgery, Intensive Care & Anti-Poisoning, and Pediatrics departments to participate in the consultation and agreed to immediately perform an emergency cesarean section. The prognosis for the mother and fetus was very serious, with many risks of complications during and after surgery.
The surgery was directly performed by MSc. Dr. Ngo Thi Nhung - Head of Obstetrics Department, Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital, with close coordination of the Surgical Anesthesia team, Pediatric Emergency team and related departments. The newborn weighed 1,700g, had poor muscle tone, cried weakly, was actively resuscitated by the Pediatric Emergency team and transferred to the Neonatal Unit - Pediatrics Department for further monitoring and treatment.

On the part of the mother, due to multiple births and systemic disorders, the uterus contracted poorly, causing heavy bleeding. The surgical team performed a partial hysterectomy and placed an abdominal drainage tube for monitoring. Currently, on the 4th day after surgery, the mother's general condition is temporarily stable, blood pressure is under control, and test results are gradually improving. The newborn has overcome the critical condition and continues to receive special care at the Pediatrics Department.
According to Dr. Ngo Thi Nhung, this is a case of an elderly pregnant woman, pregnant and giving birth many times, with severe preeclampsia. During pregnancy, she did not go for regular check-ups, and when abnormalities arose, she was not monitored and cared for by medical staff, leading to many serious complications that threatened the lives of both mother and child.
Pregnant women are advised to follow the regular prenatal check-up schedule as instructed by the medical facility. Regular check-ups help to comprehensively monitor the mother's health and the development of the fetus, and at the same time support early detection of abnormalities for timely intervention. Performing all prenatal check-ups not only contributes to ensuring a safe pregnancy but also minimizes the risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
