Special features of the Bun Huot Nam water festival of Lao people in Dien Bien

Baoquocte.vn. On April 14, at Na Sang 1 village, Nua Ngam commune, Dien Bien district People's Committee organized the Bun Huot Nam Water Festival. This is a beautiful cultural feature of Lao people residing in Dien Bien district (Dien Bien province). During the festival, people splash water on each other to pray for good luck.

This is one of a series of events aimed at welcoming the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024 and towards the 70th anniversary of the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory.

Bun Huot Nam (Water Festival) of Lao people is a traditional festival, and also one of the main festivals held to pray for favorable weather and wind for a bountiful harvest; for all things to grow and develop; to wash away the bad luck of the old year, and bring good luck to family members, families and communities in the new year.

Bun Huot Nam is also an opportunity for local people to be creative, perform folk games, traditional dances and especially the Lao water-splashing custom.

This year's festival includes activities such as: worshiping, praying, tying wrist strings to pray for luck; lam vong dance; having fun; asking for water from house to house; worshiping river and stream gods; bathing in streams...

At the Water Festival, there is also a space to display and promote cultural tourism products, handicrafts, ethnic cuisine; local agricultural and OCOP products. Along with that, there is a display of items associated with the cultural life and community activities of the Lao people in Nua Ngam commune.

Mr. Nong Quang Thang, Vice Chairman of Dien Bien District People's Committee, said that Bun Huot Nam has an important meaning in the spiritual and cultural life of the community. "The festival prays for favorable weather for a bountiful harvest, for all things to grow and develop, to wash away the bad luck of the old year, and to enter a new year of good luck for members, families and the community," said Mr. Thang.

The Bun Huot Nam Festival 2024 will take place over two days, April 13-14. At the festival, there will be an art exchange program with unique performances imbued with the culture of ethnic groups with the participation of mass art troupes of Dien Bien district; villages and hamlets in Nua Ngam commune, twinned units and communes in Dien Bien district where Lao people reside.
