On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the National Day of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (December 2, 1975 - December 2, 2025), Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to Vietnam Khamphao Ernthavanh had an interview with Nhan Dan Newspaper reporters about the great achievements that the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the Lao ethnic people have achieved in the past 50 years; about the relationship between Laos and Vietnam.

The Lao People's Democratic Republic has achieved great achievements and comprehensive development.

Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh emphasized that December 2, 1975 became a glorious historical milestone of the Lao people. Under the glorious flag of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the Lao Itsala Front, with the sincere assistance of socialist countries, especially the wholehearted assistance of the Party and people of Vietnam, the Lao people overthrew the monarchy and established the Lao People's Democratic Republic, completing the people's national democratic revolution.

The Lao people have broken free from the domination of old and new colonialism, opening a new era - the era of Peace , Independence, Democracy, Unity and Prosperity. This is the era in which the Lao people truly control their own destiny and the country, under the sole leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, defending independence and building the country in a socialist orientation.

Over the past 50 years, in the context of the world and the region continuing to change in a complex manner, with both advantages and opportunities as well as difficulties and challenges, under the talented and wise leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the Lao people have united as one, overcome all difficulties and challenges, promoted the spirit of independence and self-reliance, and determined to complete two strategic tasks: protecting and building the country.

Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh said that, in particular, after nearly 40 years of renovation, Laos has achieved many great and comprehensive achievements. Politically, it is stable, the national defense and security forces are increasingly strong, and social order and safety are guaranteed.

The economy continues to develop step by step, the average economic growth rate in 2025 will reach 4.8%, compared to 1985 when it was only 114 USD/person/year. Currently, there are investors from 53 countries investing in Laos with a total investment value of 463 billion USD and Laos has trade relations with 163 countries, territories and organizations in the world. Infrastructure such as roads, housing, office buildings are built and upgraded from north to south.

Development in the cultural and social fields has also achieved great achievements, modern technical facilities are increasingly expanded, buildings, hospitals, schools, and various vocational training centers are improved and expanded nationwide. Currently, there are Central Hospitals, Provincial Hospitals, District Hospitals and Village Health Stations, and National Universities in the North, Central and South. The fine traditional culture of the nation is preserved and restored, and life is rich. In particular, the Lao Panpipe and Brocade Fabric have been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the World.

Important tourist sites are preserved and restored. The Lao People's Democratic Republic has 04 World Heritage Sites as tourist destinations, in terms of history, culture and nature, welcoming more and more domestic and international tourists to visit Laos every year. Foreign affairs activities have shifted to linking political activities with economic activities to serve the national socio-economic development in each period in accordance with the era of globalization, digitalization and economic connectivity, implementing the policy of "Peace, Independence, Friendship and Cooperation" according to the motto "more friends, fewer enemies", combined with internal strength has enhanced the role of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in continuing to maintain peace, political stability - security and social peace, bringing favorable conditions for national socio-economic development.

Currently, the Lao People's Democratic Republic has diplomatic relations with 151 countries, which have increased many times compared to 1986 and expanded to become more in-depth and sustainable, with important cooperation frameworks with 12 countries: having a great relationship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with the People's Republic of China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and Cambodia; cooperative partnership with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Republic of Cuba, Hungary; comprehensive cooperation with Thailand and Australia; and comprehensive cooperative partnership with the United States. The Lao People's Democratic Republic has actively participated in and fulfilled its obligations in various international organizations of which the Lao People's Democratic Republic is a member such as: ASEAN, the United Nations and others.

“The great achievements that the Lao Party, State and people have achieved cannot be separated from the solid political and social foundation and the efforts, creativity, innovation and perfection of laws in each period, affirming the capacity, intelligence and steadfast political qualities of the Lao Party, State and people in overcoming numerous difficulties, with the support and assistance of international friends both near and far in a profound and sustainable way.

Along with the efforts of the entire Party, army and people of Laos, the Lao Party, State and people always remember and deeply respect the support and valuable assistance of international friends in the past struggle for independence as well as in the current cause of protecting and building the country, especially the great and effective companionship and assistance of the Party, State and people of Vietnam", Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh emphasized.

Laos-Vietnam relations are exemplary , sincere and pure.

Affirming that since ancient times, the people of Laos and Vietnam have always had a close solidarity, love and mutual assistance, Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh emphasized that the Laos-Vietnam relationship is a rare relationship, built from respect, sacrifice of blood and intelligence; it has become a model, sincere, pure, rare relationship in international relations.

The relationship between Laos and Vietnam is a regular one, an important factor ensuring the victory of the revolution and an invaluable asset of the two peoples; a great strength in the cause of protecting and developing the two countries and has become a great relationship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation, built by President Ho Chi Minh - the great leader of the Vietnamese people, President Kaysone Phomvihane and President Souphanouvong - beloved leaders of the Lao people and constantly cultivated by successive generations of leaders through the periods and the people of the two countries.

According to Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh, over the past years, the cooperative relationship between the two Parties, two States and peoples of Laos and Vietnam has continued to develop strongly, widely, deeply and effectively in all fields.

Political relations continue to be firmly consolidated, serving as the fundamental foundation for bilateral relations. Senior leaders of the two countries regularly exchange visits and meetings on the occasion of attending regional and international forums, demonstrating a high level of solidarity and trust.

Defense and security cooperation is increasingly close, profound and comprehensive, ensuring stability, security and safety in each country; there is close and effective coordination at regional and international forums. Enhancing the role and influence of both Laos and Vietnam in maintaining peace in the region and the world.

Economic, trade and investment cooperation has received attention, reformed innovative methods, promoted and monitored mechanisms and has achieved many positive steps, the economic foundation of the two countries has been increasingly developed widely and effectively. Currently, Vietnam continues to be one of the leading countries in investing in Laos with a total investment capital of over 6 billion USD. In the first 10 months of 2025, the total import-export turnover between Laos and Vietnam reached over 5.6 billion USD, considered the highest bilateral trade turnover in the past 10 years.

In particular, the cooperation in opening the Laos-Vietnam Vung Ang International Port - the third seaport of Laos - is also implementing the strategic line of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party in transforming the Lao People's Democratic Republic from a landlocked country into a country connecting the center with major markets in the region towards the sea.

Cooperation in the fields of education and training, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchange continues to be focused on improving both quality and quantity. Currently, the Vietnamese Government is interested in training and fostering human resources for Laos. There are more than 12,000 international students studying in Vietnam and continues to provide short-term and long-term training for officials on a regular basis. Laos and Vietnam have coordinated to propose and have UNESCO recognize Hin Nam No National Park of Laos as a transboundary World Natural Heritage along with Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park of Vietnam.

Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh especially emphasized that the coordination in organizing the ceremony to receive the Ho Chi Minh Trail (Truong Son Trail) on Lao soil as a National Historical Relic of Laos is also a beautiful and meaningful symbol of the special solidarity between Laos and Vietnam during the previous period of national liberation struggle.

The above event will contribute to propagating and educating the people, especially the young generation of the two countries, about the special tradition of solidarity of the Laos-Vietnam relationship as well as enriching the precious assets, demonstrating the construction with blood, sweat and intelligence of the cadres, soldiers and people of Laos and Vietnam, tens of thousands, millions of people who sacrificed in the previous war.

“The Lao Party and State affirm that they always attach importance to and give the highest priority to the special Laos-Vietnam relationship – a unique relationship in the world. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic will continue to expand comprehensive cooperation in a stable and sustainable manner with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, especially in trade and investment, and strengthen transport infrastructure connectivity to connect the two sides’ economic foundations to the international and regional markets, contributing to the prosperous and sustainable development of Laos,” Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh emphasized.

Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh said that in the context of increasingly rapid, complex and unpredictable changes in the region and the world, with both challenges and opportunities, Laos and Vietnam must continue to unite, stand side by side, trust and support each other and create more favorable conditions for mutual development on the basis of the principles and joint statements that both sides have agreed on.

Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh emphasized: "No matter how the situation develops, Laos and Vietnam will have to continue to maintain stability and do everything possible to successfully implement the agreements of the two countries' senior leaders, focusing on making economic development increasingly successful according to the highest goal that the two countries have set: to become a country of Peace, Development, Prosperity, Civilization, Justice, and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world."
