Russia began its one-month presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on July 1. The country last chaired the global body's most powerful body in April last year.

At a press conference following the first UNSC meeting on July 1 to adopt the organization's agenda for this month, Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations (UN), answered questions regarding the West's supply of weapons to Kiev for use in the ongoing conflict with Moscow.

Asked about reports of the US administration's talks with Israel and Ukraine on transferring the Middle Eastern country's aging Patriot air defense systems to Kiev, Nebenzya said: "We do not encourage countries that have not yet supplied weapons to Ukraine to do so."

“The fate of the weapons that will be transferred to Ukraine from wherever they are is finally clear. They will be destroyed like other weapons that the West and the United States are supplying to Ukraine,” the Russian ambassador said at a press conference, according to Turkish state news agency Anadolu.

Asked about former US President Donald Trump’s recent comments about ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a day if the Republican frontrunner was re-elected, Nebenzia said he had heard such statements before. “The Ukraine crisis cannot be resolved in a day or two,” he added.

Mr. Nebenzya noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the solution on June 14, before which Mr. Putin also said that the situation on the ground had changed and this needed to be taken into account.

According to Russian state news agency TASS, major events during Moscow's rotating presidency of the UNSC, discussions on how to build a more just and democratic world order, as well as ways to resolve the Middle East crisis and cooperation between the UN, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), are scheduled to take place in mid-July.

According to Mr. Nebenzya, there are expected to be 3 important events chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov himself. In total, the UNSC will hold about 20 open meetings and closed discussions in July.

The 15 members of the Security Council, including the five permanent members – China, France, Britain, Russia and the United States – hold the rotating presidency of the UNSC for one month, in alphabetical order of their names. In June, South Korea held the rotating presidency, and Sierra Leone will take over from Russia in August.
