On the occasion of attending the ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Military Region 9 (December 10, 1945 - December 10, 2025) and receiving the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces on December 8, General Sao Sokha, Commander of the Gendarmerie Command, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army (RCAF) spoke with reporters, deeply sharing about the traditional friendship between the two countries, affirming the symbolic role of Military Region 9 in the Vietnam-Cambodia solidarity.
Assessing the relationship between the Vietnam People's Army and the Royal Cambodian Army, General Sao Sokha emphasized that this is a long-standing friendship, formed and nurtured through difficult historical periods, from the struggle for national independence to the war against the Pol Pot genocidal regime.
According to the General, the geographical, historical and human ties between the two neighboring countries have created a solid foundation for this relationship to be constantly strengthened, helping the two peoples to live together in peace and develop.
Referring specifically to the role of Military Region 9, General Sao Sokha said that in the process of building an army to protect the independence of each country, the armed forces of Military Region 9 have made great and practical contributions to help the Royal Cambodian Army. This support includes human resource training, delegation exchanges, information sharing as well as financial support and technical equipment.
With its geographical location opposite Cambodia, the General said that Military Region 9 is a vivid symbol of the special solidarity and close friendship between the two countries and two armies.
In addition to defense cooperation, General Sao Sokha also expressed his deep interest in cooperation in protecting natural resources and sustainable development of the Mekong River basin. He said that the 4,000km-long Mekong River flows through 6 countries, from its source in China through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and then to the Mekong Delta (Vietnam), bringing great value in agriculture, waterway transportation, economy and culture to people living along both banks, including a common cultural feature of boat racing.
According to the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army, the Mekong River is a symbol of friendship among the peoples in the region. The river is not only valuable for the waterway economy but also for human and cultural relations with the countries it flows through. We need to cooperate together to protect all these natural resources not only for this generation, but also for future generations./.
