Over 8.2 billion people
Responding to World Population Day (July 11), Mr. Le Thanh Dung, Director of the Department of Population of the Ministry of Health , said that the global population is at a historic high, surpassing 8.2 billion people by 2025. This figure reflects an annual increase of about 71 million people, marking a growth rate of 0.89% compared to the previous year.
Although this growth rate is slower than in previous decades, the world still faces challenges related to urbanization, resource consumption, environmental impacts and economic inequality.
The United Nations (UN) predicts that the global population will continue to grow, albeit at a slower pace, before peaking around the 2080s. The rapid expansion of developing economies, particularly in Africa and South Asia, poses challenges and opportunities, affecting global markets, the workforce, and ecological sustainability.
Population growth is not just about numbers, it is also about human rights, gender equality, access to health care, climate resilience and responsible use of global resources. Governments , policymakers, researchers and communities must work together to find innovative solutions that balance economic growth with environmental conservation and human well-being.
Furthermore, women’s empowerment and reproductive rights play a vital role in stabilizing population trends. Technological advances and smart urban planning are also essential to manage high-density populations.
World Population Day, celebrated annually on 11 July, serves as an important reminder of these challenges, urging policymakers, governments and individuals to work towards sustainable development, gender equality and access to essential health care services.
This year's World Population Day, with the theme "Reproductive autonomy in a changing world", aims to emphasize the fundamental right of every individual, especially women and young people, to access information and health services to proactively, freely and responsibly make decisions about reproduction.

Encourage marriage and childbirth at the right age
According to Mr. Le Thanh Dung, in recent years, our Party and State have always paid attention to population work and adjusted policies to suit the context and actual situation.
With the principle of taking people as the center, as the goal of the country's sustainable development, Resolution No. 21-NQ/TW dated October 25, 2017 on population work in the new situation has determined the goal: " Firmly maintain the replacement fertility rate; bring the sex ratio at birth to the natural balance; effectively utilize the golden population structure, adapt to population aging; distribute the population reasonably; improve the quality of life of the people, contribute to the rapid and sustainable development of the country".
From that goal, all levels and sectors have specified it with plans, projects and action programs to implement in accordance with the characteristics of each locality.
Currently, facing practical population issues arising such as: The replacement fertility rate nationwide is not really sustainable, there is a trend of low fertility; the sex ratio at birth has decreased but has not yet returned to the natural balance; rapid population aging, population distribution, and migration management have not received due attention... requiring innovations to solve population issues more comprehensively, synchronously and fundamentally.
Mr. Tran Van Chung, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health, said that in recent years, the Hanoi Party Committee, People's Council and People's Committee have always focused on population and development work.
Therefore, Hanoi has achieved many important achievements in population work: The replacement fertility rate is maintained; The rate of pregnant women screened for the 4 most common congenital diseases before birth (reaching 85%); The rate of newborns screened for the 5 most common congenital diseases (reaching 90%).
Along with that, the rate of young people receiving pre-marital health consultation and examination reached 82%; the average life expectancy rate was 76.5; the sex ratio at birth is gradually being controlled. The city has synchronously deployed many models such as: Pre-marital consultation, health care for adolescents, youth and the elderly, at the same time, including population content in socio-economic development targets at all levels.
To ensure that population and development work in Hanoi is effectively implemented, creating clear changes and stability, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health Tran Van Chung suggested that in the coming time, it is necessary to continue to strengthen the comprehensive leadership and direction of all levels of government, promoting the strength of the entire political system in implementing population policies in the new situation.
Mr. Le Thanh Dung emphasized that in order to effectively implement, create clear changes and stability in population and development work, in the coming time, it is necessary to strengthen the comprehensive leadership and direction of all levels of government, promote the strength of the entire political system in implementing population policies in the new situation.
Along with that, promote communication, raise public awareness of gender equality, increase investment in health services, expand population services to the grassroots level, ensure access for all people, protect each person's reproductive rights, encourage marriage and childbirth at the right age...
