Peach and kumquat trees plummeted in price on the afternoon of the 29th of Tet (Lunar New Year), as Hanoi residents rushed to hunt for discounted goods.

With only a few hours left until New Year's Eve, Hanoi's spring flower markets are entering their biggest clearance sale of the Tet season. In the Lac Long Quan flower garden area (Tay Ho ward) and along Nguyen Hoang Ton, Trich Sai, and Quang Ba streets, many vendors are simultaneously displaying signs offering deep discounts on peach blossoms and kumquats, creating a bustling and lively shopping atmosphere.

Around 5 PM on the 29th day of the Lunar New Year (February 15th), traffic jams stretched along the roads around West Lake. Thousands of people flocked there to hunt for discounted peach blossom and kumquat branches. Compared to a few days earlier, the price of many peach blossom branches had dropped by up to two-thirds. Branches that were once offered for 500,000-1 million VND were now only 200,000-300,000 VND, but still struggled to find buyers at some locations.

After strolling around Lac Long Quan flower garden, Mrs. Nguyen Hoang Anh and her husband (Tay Ho ward) decided to buy two peach blossom branches for 200,000 VND each. “We’ve been busy all week, so we only just got around to shopping for Tet. We didn’t expect the price to drop so much, so we bought them right away,” Mrs. Hoang Anh shared.

Mr. Bui Thanh Quy (Tay Ho ward) said he successfully negotiated a peach blossom branch down from 1.5 million VND to 800,000 VND. "The branch still has many buds and a beautiful shape. This price is reasonable at the last minute," he said.

Small traders are busy gathering peach blossoms and packing up their stalls, preparing to close the year-end afternoon flower market.

Despite the surge in customers, many small traders remain apprehensive. As the 29th day of the Lunar New Year approaches, the pressure of transportation costs, rental fees, and the risk of unsold inventory intensifies. One seller in the Lac Long Quan area stated that if they don't sell everything by evening, they will likely have to accept losses to recover their capital. Many traders have chosen to keep their last remaining beautiful peach blossom branches to decorate their homes for Tet instead of waiting for customers.

Small magnolia branches, priced at around 100,000 VND per branch, are also a popular choice. Conversely, larger magnolia branches, costing around 2 million VND per branch, are less sought after, with few customers inquiring about purchasing them.

Yellow orchids are being sold for 300,000 VND per pot, attracting many buyers.

In the high-end segment, some orchid shops on Lac Long Quan Street are offering a 50% discount on all products on the afternoons of the 28th and 29th of Tet (Lunar New Year), aiming to clear inventory and close early. According to sales staff, large orchid pots, valued at 100 million VND or more, have already been ordered and delivered by customers since the 25th of the 12th lunar month. The shops mainly have medium and small pots left, originally priced under 10 million VND.

Orchid pots containing 10 plants, priced under 5 million VND (before discount), attracted a lot of customer interest, with many people constantly inquiring about purchasing them. On the afternoon of the 28th of the 12th lunar month, the last medium-sized orchid pot in the shop, priced at 40 million VND after the discount, was delivered to a customer's home.

The flower and ornamental plant market on the 29th day of the Lunar New Year showed two distinct trends: peach blossoms and kumquats were heavily discounted to clear inventory; while potted flowers and orchids in the mid-range price category attracted customers due to their flexible pricing. In the bustling atmosphere before New Year's Eve, many families rushed to complete the final touches of their decorations, while sellers strived to close deals, bringing to a close a volatile business season.
