This is one of the world's largest container ships, and also the largest vessel to ever dock at Hai Phong port. It is 400 meters long, has a deadweight tonnage of 197,087 DWT, and a capacity of approximately 20,119 TEU (1 TEU is equivalent to the volume of a 20-foot container). To put it into perspective, the ship's length is greater than the height of the Eiffel Tower in France; roughly equivalent to more than five Airbus A380 aircraft lined up side-by-side. The ship is designed to operate on major global shipping routes, especially the Asia-Europe route, playing a crucial role in the global logistics chain.
This event is not only significant from a technical standpoint, but is also considered a remarkable milestone in the more than 150-year development of Hai Phong seaport; once known as "Six Warehouses Wharf" in the early 20th century, it has now become "Hundred Warehouses Wharf" with hundreds of warehouses stretching across the area.
Previously, a record for Vietnam's maritime industry was also set at Cai Mep - Thi Vai port (formerly Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, now Ho Chi Minh City). On March 30, 2023, Gemalink International Port welcomed the ship.
The container ship OOCL Spain has a capacity of 24,188 TEU; is 399.99m long; 61.3m wide; has an inbound draft of -15m; and an outbound draft of -15.5m. It is also one of the largest super container ships in the world.
Setting records in the maritime sector is no easy feat, and it's not just something to be achieved for fun. To safely and efficiently receive and operate super-large vessels, maritime infrastructure must meet very difficult and stringent requirements. The successful reception of super-large ships by Vietnamese seaports is clear evidence of our ability to meet international standards. Globally, only a few dozen seaports have the capacity to receive ships of this size, further solidifying Vietnam's position on the world maritime map and opening up opportunities to accommodate more large-scale shipping routes.
The ability of Vietnamese seaports to accommodate extremely large vessels also helps shorten the shipping chain, reduce dependence on international transshipment, thereby saving logistics costs, enhancing the competitiveness of import and export goods, and contributing to promoting Vietnam's position in the global supply chain.
By promoting the application and mastery of modern technology in management and operation; promoting energy saving and environmental friendliness according to the advanced and modern "green port" model in the world; building an "electronic port" model to implement online services; automatically exchanging data with customs and international ports; Vietnamese seaports have been increasingly demonstrating their position globally, proving their role as bridges connecting international trade, making an important contribution to bringing Vietnamese products, goods and people to the world and bringing the world to Vietnam.
