Promoting research and application of Mathematics to serve socio-economic development

In recent years, along with the strong development of science and technology, Mathematics has increasingly affirmed its fundamental role in the process of innovation, digital transformation and sustainable development of the country. Not only stopping at the field of theoretical research, Mathematics is gradually going deeper into practice, becoming an important tool in solving practical problems of economic and social life, from industrial production, healthcare, finance, banking to agriculture and national defense.

In that context, the Ministry of Science and Technology has approved and implemented the National Science and Technology Program code KC.17/25-30: "Research on the application of Mathematics in a number of key sectors and fields serving socio-economic development". This is a program of strategic significance to promote research capacity, enhance the application of Mathematics in production, management and life, contributing to the country's development goals in the period up to 2030.

Foundation for key economic sectors

Mathematics is not only a basic theoretical tool but also a "common language" of all sciences . In the era of industry 4.0, most advanced technologies, from artificial intelligence, big data, numerical simulation, to new material design, are based on mathematical models and algorithms. Thanks to these advances, many key areas in Vietnam are gradually transforming their operating methods, optimizing processes and improving efficiency.

In industry, optimization models and data analysis help businesses forecast demand, optimize supply chains and reduce production costs. In agriculture, Mathematics is applied in environmental data analysis, crop growth simulation, yield forecasting and weather risk management, contributing to the development of smart and sustainable agriculture. In healthcare, signal processing algorithms, medical imaging and disease prediction models are effectively supporting the diagnosis, treatment and care of public health.

In the field of finance and banking, mathematical models help analyze risks, value assets, detect fraud and forecast market fluctuations. Meanwhile, mathematics also plays an important role in environmental resource research, hydrometeorology, climate change forecasting and sustainable urban development planning.

KC.17/25-30 Program - the driving force behind Applied Mathematics

The KC.17/25-30 program was built to promote the potential of the Vietnamese Mathematics community, orient applied research to areas of urgent need, and at the same time strengthen the connection between research institutes, universities and businesses. This is a step to concretize the Party and State's policy on Mathematics development in the new period, in accordance with the "National Key Program for Mathematics Development for the period 2021-2030".

The tasks under the KC.17/25-30 Program will focus on a number of priority directions such as: Developing mathematical models, algorithms and computational tools to serve production, business, healthcare, agriculture and environment; Applying mathematics in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, simulation and big data processing; Building practical modeling problems, supporting state management, planning and socio-economic forecasting; Promoting international cooperation, expert exchange, and transfer of mathematical technology between domestic and foreign research units.

A highlight of the Program is the promotion of the connection between research and practical application. Instead of focusing only on academic works, the topics will aim to solve specific problems of the industry, locality and business, creating products with clear economic and social value.

To achieve sustainable effectiveness, the KC.17/25-30 Program also aims to build an applied mathematics ecosystem in Vietnam, where institutes, schools, businesses and management agencies participate in developing, exploiting and using mathematical products, models and software. The formation of interdisciplinary research groups, simulation computing centers, or specialized training facilities in applied mathematics will contribute to strengthening scientific potential, while creating high-quality human resources for the knowledge economy.

In addition, the program also encourages expanding international cooperation and learning from experiences from countries with developed applied mathematics, especially in areas such as industrial simulation, big data processing and complex forecasting models.

Applied Mathematics not only helps solve scientific and technical problems but also directly improves productivity, quality and competitiveness of the economy. In the current trend of globalization and digital transformation, investing in Mathematics is investing in knowledge, technology and the future of sustainable development of the country.

With the implementation of the KC.17/25-30 Program, the Ministry of Science and Technology expects to create mathematical products and solutions with high application value; contributing to building a strong science foundation, a developed digital economy and a smarter society. This is a clear demonstration of the orientation of "bringing mathematics from the laboratory to practice", creating a new driving force for Vietnam's socio-economic development in the coming period.
