According to survey and exploration results, the sea area of Soc Trang province has about 13.9 billion m³ of sand (circled into 6 areas, from B1 to B6) that can be exploited for construction materials. To date, the Federation of Geology and Minerals (Vietnam Geological Department) has completed research and evaluation work at the B1 mine area.
Accordingly, area B1 has an area of 250km2, 20-25km from shore, 3-9m deep from the water surface, with a total sand reserve of more than 680 million m³. In particular, the sand content in the exploration area accounts for a very high proportion (over 82.8%), low heavy metal content, safe radioactive properties, suitable for use as landfill material.
From the above results, the Federation of Geology and Minerals proposed to initially exploit area B1 (area of 32km², more than 20km from Dinh An channel) with a total sand output of 145 million m³.
Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway is under construction, there is a need for filling materials. |
According to the assessment, up to now, the pilot use of sea sand exploited in Tra Vinh province to build the highway foundation (at the DT978 road restoration section, Hong Dan district, Bac Lieu province) of the North-South expressway project, Hau Giang - Ca Mau section has given positive results: sea sand meets the requirements of compactness and elasticity similar to river sand; chemical indicators also give results within the allowable limits; there is no evidence that the use of sea sand increases salinity as well as the spread of salinity into the surrounding environment... This is an important basis for exploiting and putting sea sand into use as a common construction material.
In the Mekong Delta, many projects are facing the risk of being behind schedule due to lack of filling materials. According to estimates, the demand for sand for the foundation of 4 expressway projects: Can Tho - Ca Mau, Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang, My An - Cao Lanh and An Huu - Cao Lanh is about 54 million m³.
Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Duy Lam said that the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway alone will need 18.5 million m³ of sand to fill the entire route from now until June 30, 2024. However, the localities of An Giang, Dong Thap and Vinh Long have only completed the licensing procedures for exploiting about 6 million m³, leading to the risk of not meeting the progress assigned by the Prime Minister.
According to experts, if sea sand is put into use, it will promptly meet the source of filling materials for highway projects, construction of traffic infrastructure, urban areas, seaports, industrial parks, etc. in the Mekong Delta region, as well as neighboring areas.
Mr. Tran Van Lau, Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province, said that the exploitation of sea sand is unprecedented, and this is the first time the province has implemented it, so it will face many difficulties. However, the province will urgently complete the procedures according to regulations, ensuring a full legal basis to soon put the exploitation of sea sand resources into practice.
