Manchester United may have beaten Wolves, had 27 shots and climbed to sixth. But none of those numbers are enough to inspire confidence. The only thing that can be considered “true” at the moment is Mason Mount’s improved form.
Mount is "doing football" again
No one at Old Trafford has had a more difficult 18 months than Mount. He arrived for £55m, with the expectation of being a modern, versatile and durable attacking piece. That expectation was quickly shattered by injuries, inconsistent form and a sense of disharmony in his playing style. Mount disappeared from the squad, and gradually became a forgotten figure in United’s rebuild.
But what has been happening in recent weeks is a true comeback, not a flash in the pan, but the sign of an upward curve.
Three goals in his last four starts isn’t just an impressive statistic. It’s how Mount scores them: good positioning, purposeful movement, a good, decisive touch. Against Wolves, his goal came from a very Mount situation: reading the game ahead of the defence, cutting into space and finishing cleanly.

This was not the case with Mount last season. When he was in poor form, he was always half a beat behind. When he lacked confidence, every move was heavy. Now, Mount moves with ease, “in sync” with Bruno Fernandes, and most importantly: he understands his place in Ruben Amorim’s system.
Amorim’s style of play requires a lot of energy, lacking absolute freedom. In it, the attacking midfielder must not only circulate the ball but also press, support the defense and create depth. Mount was born to play this style of football. Chelsea have exploited it, United have not, until now.
“He defends well, attacks well and the quality of his touches is very high,” Amorim said. It was not a compliment. It was confirmation that Mount was returning to the most essential part of his game: versatility and exceptional tenacity.
Amorim is missing Benjamin Sesko due to injury, and Mbeumo due to preparing for CAN 19. United lacks a second-line creator. Mount appeared at the right time, and filled the gap that the system needed most.
Mount is the key sign of recovery, not victory against Wolves
A team that wants to go up must have at least one individual who “carries the signal”. Last season, MU had Garnacho in his explosive phase, and Mainoo at the end of the season. But this season, all the signals are faint. They do not have a significant winning streak, and do not have a pillar who plays consistently throughout.
Mount is changing that.

He is not the soul of the team, not the saviour. But his current form gives United a fulcrum they rarely have: a player who knows how to raise the quality of matches regularly. Not based on inspiration, not on moments. But on stability, the most precious thing at Old Trafford right now.
Mount doesn’t need to score 20 goals to be successful. He just needs to maintain the style of football he’s playing: clean, precise, moving, pressing intelligently and being in the right place. United haven’t had a midfielder like that since Herrera, a player who does everything to make the system work.
If United want real change, Mount is the mirror they should look to: less showy, more responsible, and consistent week after week. It wasn’t the win over Wolves, but Mount that was the bright spot that showed United could move forward in a more serious way.
Mount hasn’t saved the season. But he is paving the way for his own return, and sometimes that’s more important than a triumphant win.
