Proposing provinces in the Central region affected by floods to overcome the consequences of natural disasters and protect cultural heritage

In document No. 6473/BVHTTDL-DSVH on overcoming the consequences of natural disasters for relics and museums in the provinces of Gia Lai, Dak Lak , Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated that recently, storms and floods, especially the historic floods on a large scale, have caused serious flooding and heavy damage to people, houses and infrastructure... in the provinces of Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong.

To urgently overcome the consequences of natural disasters and protect cultural heritage in the four provinces, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requested the People's Committees of Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong provinces to direct functional agencies and local authorities to organize inspections, review the technical status, assess the level of damage to relics and museums in the provinces to promptly propose measures to support, reinforce, and ensure safety, and prevent collapses and landslides at relics and museums.

At the same time, organize inventory, review, and evaluate the preservation status of documents, relics, and antiquities in relics and museums that are affected or at risk of being damaged by rain, floods, and mold to develop urgent preservation plans to avoid irreparable losses. In case of needing professional support from the Ministry, it is recommended that the People's Committees of the provinces proactively propose to the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to direct competent agencies to advise and coordinate handling.

Along with that, strengthen propaganda and guide the community to participate in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters; detect and warn early signs of abnormalities to promptly have response and remedial plans, thereby contributing to enhancing the effectiveness of management, protection and promotion of the value of relics, artifacts, antiquities, etc., ensuring safety for people and relic works and museums.

In the long term, it is recommended that the People's Committees of Gia Lai , Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, and Lam Dong provinces direct the Departments of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to coordinate with specialized agencies in the area to develop a Disaster Risk Management Plan, in order to be more proactive in identifying, preventing, responding to, minimizing, and recovering from natural disaster risks for relics and museums in the area.
