According to the Straits Times on November 13, Dawn - Pakistan's leading English-language newspaper - had to remove and publicly apologize after readers discovered a paragraph created by ChatGPT appearing right in an article about car consumption in Pakistan.

The issue was discovered when readers noticed that the end of the article looked identical to a sample reply when using ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI.

“If you want, I can also create a more engaging ‘front-page style’ version, with concise line-by-line figures and bold layouts, infographic-ready for maximum impact. Would you like me to do that too?” - the paragraph details appear in the article.

The error was quickly discovered by readers, and the newspaper immediately faced a wave of criticism related to journalistic ethics, integrity, and the use of AI in news reporting.

Many social media users were quick to accuse Dawn of lacking transparency and undermining the credibility of print journalism. “This is an embarrassment to print journalism, and especially to a paper like Dawn , which has a very strong reputation,” wrote one Reddit user.

One X account was scathing in its criticism: “Imagine lecturing others on ‘media ethics’ while publishing your own AI-generated article. That’s exactly what Dawn has just done – caught red-handed using ChatGPT content in print without even disclosing it. The mask has fallen, and the hypocrisy is revealed.”

The paper quickly edited the article and publicly apologized. Dawn admitted that the article had been “edited using AI, in violation of the editorial’s current AI policy.”

“The original text contained an AI-generated paragraph that was left behind during the editing process, and this has been removed from the online version. The matter is under investigation and the editorial team regrets the error,” the statement said.

AI has been used by many journalists and reporters to check data or read thousands of pages of documents to shorten the content - tasks that can take reporters hours, even days, but AI can handle in just a few seconds.

Some of the world's largest newsrooms, including the New York Times, Bloomberg, and Business Insider, also use AI tools in their reporting processes, but they have established standards for moderation, including mandatory human moderation and close oversight to avoid errors.

Dawn newspaper is also said to have used AI for news aggregation purposes. Using AI is not wrong, but “not checking the content generated by AI is excessive,” Pakistani journalist Omar Quraishi commented on X.
