VnExpressVnExpress09/11/2023

According to the draft adjustment of the road network planning, the North-South expressway in the East will be extended by 90 km from the Ca Mau - Dat Mui section.

The Ministry of Transport is seeking comments on the draft adjustment to the road network planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

The new point is that the North-South expressway in the East will be 2,153 km long, from 4 to 10 lanes, an increase of 90 km compared to the current planning. The route starts from Huu Nghi border gate ( Lang Son ) to Dat Mui (Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau), adding a 90 km long Ca Mau - Dat Mui section, 4 lanes, invested before 2030.

According to the planning unit, the traffic forecast for the Ca Mau - Dat Mui section by 2030 is about 18,300-20,100 converted cars per day and night, so it is necessary to form a 4-lane expressway to synchronize with the Can Tho - Ca Mau section.

The drafting agency also adjusted the planning of the Ben Luc (Long An) - Trung Luong (Tien Giang) expressway section to 8 lanes instead of 6 lanes as currently planned.

In the North, the 117 km Ninh Binh - Hai Phong expressway is proposed to be adjusted from 4 to 6 lanes; the Noi Bai - Bac Ninh - Ha Long route will be expanded to 6 lanes and invested in before 2030.

For the Central Highlands region, the drafting agency proposed to add to the planning the 136 km long, 4-lane Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway. This expressway starts in Duc Pho district (Quang Ngai), ends in Kon Tum city, expected to be invested before 2030.

The addition of the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway to form an additional East - West axis connecting the Central Highlands with the South Central Coast region when National Highway 24 is forecasted to not be able to meet traffic volume until 2030.

With the draft road planning, the national highway system will have 42 routes with a total length of 9,263 km, currently planned at 9,014 km.

Previously, according to the expressway network planning until 2050 approved by the Government, the two longitudinal axes of the route include the North-South expressway in the East (Lang Son - Ca Mau) with a length of 2,063 km, 4-10 lanes; the North-South expressway in the West is about 1,205 km long, 4-6 lanes.

The Northern region has 14 expressways, about 2,305 km long, with 4-6 lanes; the Central - Central Highlands region has 10 expressways, 1,431 km long, with 4-6 lanes; the Southern region has 10 expressways, about 1,290 km long, with 4-10 lanes.

The Hanoi urban belt includes 3 expressways, 425 km long, 4-6 lanes; the Ho Chi Minh City urban belt includes 2 routes, 295 km long, 4-8 lanes.

The transport sector is implementing 12 North-South expressway projects by 2025. Along with more than 1,000 km of expressway nationwide that has been exploited, it is expected that by 2025 the North-South expressway will be connected with a length of 2,063 km, meeting transportation needs and overcoming congestion and accidents on National Highway 1.
