Google will pay $2.4 billion for the deal, according to a source familiar with the matter, CNBC reported. Google is not investing in Windsurf but will receive a non-exclusive license to some of Windsurf’s technology, allowing the startup to freely license its technology to others.

Some of the top talent from Windsurf's team will join to advance the company's work in agentic coding, according to a Google DeepMind spokesperson.

The deal between Google and Windsurf comes after the AI coding startup was in talks with OpenAI about a $3 billion acquisition deal, according to CNBC .

The move reflects the increasingly fierce competition for talent in the AI field. Meta has made lucrative offers to several OpenAI employees in recent weeks. Most notably, Facebook’s parent company appointed Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang to lead a new superintelligence team as part of a $14.3 billion investment in his startup.

Douglas Chen, one of the co-founders of Windsurf, will be among those joining Google.

Windsurf has become more popular this year along with the trend of vibe coding (using new generation AI tools to program). In April, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said AI is contributing to 30% of the company's code.

Developers and non-developers alike have embraced the concept of vibe coding, driving revenue for Windsurf and competitors like Cursor.

This isn’t the first time Google has poached select talent from a startup. It did the same with Character.AI last summer. Amazon and Microsoft have also poached AI talent in similar ways, with their Adept and Inflection deals, respectively.
