(GLO)- These days, activities are taking place all over the country to commemorate the 76th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27). Thousands of cemeteries across the country are sparkling in the light of thousands of candles in gratitude and flowers on the graves of martyrs, recognizing the respect and gratitude of today's generation towards generations of fathers and brothers who sacrificed their blood and bones for the cause of national liberation, preserving independence and freedom for the Fatherland.
In June 1947, amidst the difficulties of the early days of the resistance war against France, in the Viet Bac resistance base, President Ho Chi Minh decided to choose July 27 as “National War Invalids Day” so that “our people could show their filial piety, charity, and love for war invalids”. Later, “National War Invalids Day” was renamed War Invalids and Martyrs Day.
The history of the struggle for national liberation has recorded the contributions of countless heroes, martyrs, wounded soldiers, sick soldiers, people with revolutionary contributions, those who did not spare their youth, sacrificed their blood and bones for the happiness of the people. Therefore, remembering and showing gratitude to those who sacrificed for the country and the people is to demonstrate the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source", a noble sentiment of the Vietnamese people.
Fulfilling Uncle Ho's wishes, over the past 76 years, the Party and State have always paid attention to leading and directing the implementation of gratitude work. Preferential policies and ordinances have promoted the tradition of "When drinking water, remember its source"; the beneficiaries of preferential treatment have been constantly expanded; the regimes have also been gradually improved, creating conditions for relatives of martyrs, children of war invalids and sick soldiers to access preferential policies on study, employment, economic development, and life stabilization. On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day this year, the Government issued Decree No. 55/2023/ND-CP amending the preferential allowance standard for people with revolutionary contributions, raising the preferential allowance standard for people with revolutionary contributions from VND 1,624,000 to VND 2,055,000.
Currently, the country has more than 9.2 million people with meritorious services, including 1.2 million martyrs, more than 117,000 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, more than 1,300 People's Armed Forces Heroes, Labor Heroes, nearly 800,000 wounded and sick soldiers...; there are 65 facilities for caring for and nursing people with meritorious services, including 30 centers for caring for and nursing seriously wounded and sick soldiers. Thousands of living Vietnamese Heroic Mothers are cared for by agencies and units, ensuring that the living standards of people with meritorious services are equal to or higher than the average level of the local population.
Showing gratitude is becoming the conscience and responsibility of the whole community when social organizations, businesses, and philanthropists have joined hands with the State to organize a widespread movement with many different ways, but all with the common goal of contributing to easing the pain of loss for those left behind. Hundreds of thousands of gratitude houses, gratitude gardens, and gratitude savings books have been donated, helping war invalids and martyrs' families to ease some of the hardships in life. Models of sponsoring martyrs' children; adopting lonely, weak parents of martyrs... are increasingly being replicated, becoming a noble gesture of today's generation to show gratitude for the great sacrifices and losses of those who came before.
From North to South, more than 3,000 martyrs' cemeteries and memorials have been built, every year always opening their doors to welcome the children who sacrificed their lives across the country and performed international duties in Laos and Cambodia back to their motherland. The work of collecting remains and identifying martyrs has never stopped. Because, everyone understands that, each grave of a martyr whose name is recorded is one more relative, one more family whose pain of losing a loved one is relieved.
At the recent national conference to honor outstanding people with meritorious services held in Thua Thien- Hue province, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested all levels, sectors and localities to thoroughly grasp and effectively implement the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, the Directive of the Secretariat on gratitude work, promote the care of war invalids, sick soldiers, families of martyrs, people with meritorious services to the revolution... resolutely not to let any person with meritorious services to the revolution not receive the attention and care of the Party and State.
July - the month of gratitude, the month of the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source". With great responsibility and deep affection, today's generation vows to soothe the pain, dry the tears, and lessen the longing of the martyrs' relatives, so that the material and spiritual life of those with meritorious services will become more and more complete and better; so that "Repaying gratitude" will always be the tradition, the morality, and the affection of the Vietnamese people.
