How to increase the rate of students graduating on time? This is the central question raised at the discussion "Improving the rate of students graduating on time" recently organized by VNU-HCM. The event aims to find a synchronous solution for the entire system, aiming to increase the rate of on-time graduation, ensuring the training quality and reputation of member schools.

Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai

At the seminar, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that increasing the rate of students graduating on time is an urgent requirement that the Central Government pays special attention to. "This is not only a criterion for training quality but also reflects the responsibility of higher education institutions in ensuring learning progress for learners," Ms. Mai emphasized.

According to the leaders of the HCM City National University, the rate of students graduating on time at some member schools has not met expectations, requiring a comprehensive re-evaluation. They are requested to review training programs, improve management efficiency, strengthen student support and closely coordinate between functional departments.

Building clear KPIs for the 2026-2030 period is also considered an important direction to improve the on-time graduation rate throughout the system.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Assessment of Training Quality (VNU-HCM), said the main reason why students are slow to graduate is because they have not accumulated enough credits and have not met foreign language standards. In addition, many personal factors such as psychological pressure, health and financial difficulties... also interrupt the learning process.

At the seminar, delegates contributed many ideas revolving around three key groups of solutions.

Firstly, review and standardize the entire training management system; build clear output standards associated with transparent testing and evaluation processes.

Second, strengthen the role of lecturers in consulting and accompanying students from the first year to promptly detect difficulties.

Third, promote the application of AI and Big Data in predicting the risk of learning delays, integrating multi-source data and upgrading the learning tracking system.

Some opinions emphasized that mental health care for students needs to be paid more attention. Delegates suggested implementing stress risk screening, improving the capacity of psychological counseling teams and strengthening professional connections to support students comprehensively, from studying to life.

At the end of the discussion, the units agreed that increasing the rate of students graduating on time is a key task for the 2026-2030 period. VNU-HCM affirmed that it will closely coordinate with member schools to monitor, evaluate and effectively implement the proposed solutions, aiming to ensure the learning progress of students and improve the training quality of the entire system.
