Digital identification and online exhibition of ancient artifacts represent a breakthrough in the application of technology to the preservation and promotion of heritage values in Hue. This will harness the potential of the digital economy and contribute to the strong promotion of Vietnamese culture globally.

Visitors can explore and learn about the artifacts displayed at the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum, which are equipped with NFC chips.

Identifying artifacts

At the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum, visitors can use their smartphones to bring them close to NFC (Near Field Communication) chips attached to artifacts characteristic of the Nguyen Dynasty, such as the throne, palanquin, and ceremonial shoes (used in daily life and rituals), and gold and jade branches (interior decoration). Immediately, information about the origin, historical role, cultural significance, and details of each artifact is displayed in full, including images, videos , 3D models, text, and even AI-powered guides.

Associate Professor Tran Quang Hoa, a lecturer at Hue University of Education, shared that using NFC, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the exhibits that the guides often cannot fully explain: "Like 'golden branches and jade leaves,' we understand that the colors of the buds, petals, and flower pots all carry specific meanings, clearly defining their status."

With the goal of strongly promoting Vietnamese culture globally and exploiting the digital economic potential of heritage, the Hue Ancient Citadel Relics Conservation Center (the unit managing the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum) is also collaborating with other units to build a digital cultural exhibition space.

According to Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Ancient Citadel Conservation Center, by simply accessing https://museehue.vn, visitors can immediately immerse themselves in a virtual character, move as they wish to get close to the artifacts, learn information, and observe the exhibits almost as if they were actually present at the museum.

This model anticipates the wave of augmented reality technology, capable of data encryption, high security, and anti-counterfeiting features. The one-to-one link between the physical and digital versions also helps identify copyrights, creating derivative versions (F1) that can be sold directly to customers or listed on e-commerce platforms. This approach helps Vietnamese heritage – carrying Vietnamese culture – travel the world.

“Museums in particular, and the relics belonging to the Hue Imperial Citadel complex in general, due to their unique reliance on ancient architectural spaces, are somewhat limited in their ability to apply modern technology in exhibitions. Therefore, digitizing heritage is an effective measure to support and promote the value of ancient artifacts,” Mr. Hoang Viet Trung shared.

Spreading the value of treasures.

Within the traditional houses of the Hue Imperial Citadel, visitors, especially young people, are delighted to discover the symbols of the Nguyen Dynasty, modeled as hidden treasures within "blind bags." After selecting a "blind bag," visitors use simulated archaeological tools to "excavate" by breaking through the outer layer of plaster, and are surprised to find precious artifacts. Each artifact is tagged with NFC.

Dubbed the "Archaeological Capital," the site features "blind pockets" where visitors can easily collect artifacts or find interesting gifts. "The 'excavation' process also serves to connect the younger generation with national history, raising awareness of the importance of cultural heritage in the nation's development," said Mai Thi Ha, a student at Da Nang University of Technology.

According to Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, "The Archaeological Capital Chronicle" demonstrates a new approach combining conservation and the application of pioneering technology, contributing to the promotion of Vietnamese culture and heritage in a creative and sustainable way. "The Archaeological Capital Chronicle" is proving that creatively reviving history and culture can generate immense appeal, especially for Generation Z.

The implementation process has confirmed both the feasibility and sustainable scalability through digital identification and digital exhibition of artifacts. From 10 artifacts identified on a pilot basis in 2024, this number increased to 98 in 2025, and the Hue City People's Committee has now approved the identification of an additional 896 artifacts.

Mr. Hoang Viet Trung stated that they will continue to develop a circular digital economy model: revenue from digital exhibition tickets, physical products, content copyrights, and experiential services will be reinvested in infrastructure operation and the application of the digital exhibition system for antiques.

The success of these solutions also opens up opportunities for multi-sectoral connections: from education and research to content creation and smart tourism, creating a sustainable cultural industry value chain. Integrating technology into heritage preservation and promotion paves the way for Vietnamese culture to integrate deeply into the global cultural space.
