Looking for the light from a new sun in a concert by pianist Bich Tra

On the evening of December 7, in Ho Chi Minh City, a solo concert titled The Gleam of Another Sun by pianist Bich Tra took place.

Rays from a New Sun is a concert with a visually oriented stage concept, and is also a preparation for the project of recording the entire Sonatas of Alexander Scriabin by artist Bich Tra.

Musical journey from darkness to light

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Bich Tra said the inspiration for the name Rays of Light from a New Sun came from a poem by Russian composer Alexander Scriabin.

In the poem, Scriabin speaks of a liberation - a liberation from material burdens, allowing the soul to follow "the light of a star". The star is not a real object, but a symbol: a pure beauty that he pursued all his life.

"When I read the poem, I was very moved. I think every artist always strives for such a kind of 'beauty'. In Scriabin's music, that beauty is like a distant star, unreachable but bright enough to pull him out of his suffering. That's why I chose this theme for the program," she said.

The concert Rays from a New Sun is divided into two movements with five works from the great composers Chopin and Scriabin, including Scherzo No.1, Op. 20, Piano Sonata No.1, Ballade No.1, Piano Sonata No.3, Piano Sonata No.4.

Chopin and Scriabin were very different, and so was their music. Chopin was soft, Scriabin was strong and powerful, like a struggle to escape reality.

Artist Bich Tra skillfully placed these two musical worlds side by side, so that the contrast created the overall spirit of the music night, sometimes gentle and profound, sometimes intense and explosive with intense musical language and emotions.

Under Bich Tra's hands, each work becomes a separate story, leading the audience to experience many different emotions.

It is Chopin's desperate sobs, the pain and heartbreak in every melody of the Scherzo and Ballade , but also the moments of peace and serenity in Sonata No. 3.

Scriabin appeared with intense energy, each note seemed to explode, drawing the audience into a journey to find spiritual light, helping listeners feel like they had touched the moment of "recognizing the new sun" after a series of struggles.

After the concert, Bich Tra revealed that this was the first time she performed two Scriabin pieces in the project of recording all of his Sonatas.

Performing in advance helps her learn each piece more deeply, and each time she stands on stage, she will understand them more, while giving the audience the most subtle, complete and emotional musical experience.

During the practice, there were times when the female artist felt she could touch the "Scriabin light", that is, she understood more clearly the path of composition such as why he chose this chord, why he changed the nuance in that section. Those moments made her very emotional.

When asked which feeling best describes this project - fear, excitement or faith - Bich Tra did not hesitate to choose excitement.

Not because it's easy, but because the more difficult it is, the more she feels like she's expanding her limits: "It's that difficulty that makes me feel like I'm expanding my abilities, stepping to a new level. Every time I learn something, I feel excited. For me, this is a series of very valuable 'new lessons'."

Looking back on the whole journey, she sees the show as an important turning point that helped her "absorb" more deeply before the recording process.

It can be said that the Rays from a New Sun concert is not only a place where kindred spirits find empathy in music.

This is also the moment when Bich Tra and the audience together experience an emotional journey, recreating the light from a new sun through each piano key, each musical note, exactly like the message the program wants to convey.
