U17 France has not shown its superior strength. |
France U17 arrived in Qatar as the favourites, but they ended the group stage in doubt. The 0-1 loss to Uganda was not only a shock, but also exposed a young team lacking courage and direction.
James Bogere's only goal in the first half sealed a historic victory for Uganda, their first at the U17 World Cup. The African side played confidently, defended solidly and took full advantage of their opponents' mistakes.
Meanwhile, France looked disjointed, relying too much on Batola’s flashes of brilliance. The Blues even managed to put the ball in the net after Nassoko’s shot, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
After three games, France have only four points from nine, a disappointing showing for a team that won the European Youth Championship. They barely beat Chile, drew with Canada and lost to Uganda. All four teams finished with four points, but France advanced on goal difference. However, their group-top position is now in name only.
Coach Lionel Rouxel knows the problem: his team lacks rhythm, cohesion and fighting spirit. If they don’t quickly renew themselves, France could soon be out of the game. In Qatar, reputation alone is not enough. The U17 World Cup has proven that the bravest team deserves to go far.
