Unexpected developments of storm No. 15 Koto, East Sea likely to have 1-2 more storms in December

Storm No. 15 Koto weakened into a tropical depression early this afternoon (December 1) and will continue to weaken into a low pressure area at sea, earlier than previously forecast. In December 2025, the East Sea may see 1-2 storms or tropical depressions.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, this afternoon (December 1), storm No. 15 Koto weakened into a tropical depression.

At 1 p.m., the center of the tropical depression was located in the northwest sea area of ​​the central East Sea. The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression was level 7 (50-61 km/h), gusting to level 9. Almost no movement.

It is forecasted that in the next 12 hours, the tropical depression will move in the South-Southwest direction, at a speed of about 5km/h. By 1am tomorrow morning (December 2), the center of the tropical depression will be in the Northwestern sea area of ​​the central East Sea, about 200km east of the eastern coast of Gia Lai - Dak Lak province; the intensity will now decrease to level 6, gusting to level 8.

In the next 12 hours, the tropical depression will move in a southwest direction at a speed of about 10km/h and weaken into a low pressure area over the sea of ​​Gia Lai - Dak Lak provinces.

Storm Koto formed from a tropical depression east of the central Philippines, strengthened into a storm and entered the East Sea on the night of November 25, becoming the 15th storm in this sea area.

After nearly 6 days of moving from fast to slow, then almost no movement, the intensity of storm No. 15 has also weakened, earlier than previously forecast. Thus, the storm is no longer able to affect our mainland.

However, due to the influence of the cold air strengthening combined with the circulation of the weakened low pressure area from storm No. 15, and disturbances in the East wind zone above, from the night of December 2-5, in the area from Quang Tri to Da Nang city, the eastern part of the provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa, there will be widespread moderate and heavy rain .

In the immediate future, due to the influence of the tropical depression, the northwest sea area between the East Sea and the sea off the coast of Gia Lai - Dak Lak province will have strong winds of level 6-7, gusting to level 9; waves 2-4m high, rough seas. Ships operating in the above-mentioned dangerous areas are likely to be affected by storms, whirlwinds, strong winds, and large waves.

In a further forecast, the meteorological agency said that in December 2025, there is a possibility of 1-2 storms/tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea (average of many years: 1 storm in the East Sea, 0.2 storms making landfall in Vietnam).

At the same time, in provinces and cities from Quang Tri to Da Nang, the east of Quang Ngai province to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa, there is a possibility of widespread heavy rains (concentrated in the first half of December).

Nationwide, there is still a possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
