What's special about the mid-range Google Pixel 7a phone?

VTC NewsVTC News30/05/2023

The Google Pixel 7a offers premium features at a reasonable price, including a top-of-the-line chip and a top-of-the-line camera. The Pixel 7a costs £449 – £50 more than the original 6a, but £150 cheaper than the Pixel 7 – while offering most of the same features.

In fact, the Google Pixel 7a looks almost identical to the Google Pixel 7, just a little smaller. The Google Pixel 7a has a beautiful, bright 6.1-inch OLED display with an upgraded 90Hz refresh rate to keep things smooth when scrolling. The phone is a good size and easy to fit in your pocket, but has a big enough screen to watch videos on your commute.

Pixel 7a costs 449 GBP around 11.5 million VND

The Google Pixel 7a has face unlock for the phone as well as a fingerprint scanner. It's a good combination, adding the convenience of facial recognition for unlocking the phone in good lighting conditions, while still keeping fingerprint authentication secure for banking apps and the like. The fingerprint scanner isn't the fastest on the market, but it works well if you get your finger right during setup.

Google Pixel 7a has a set of specifications with:

  • Display: 6.1in 90Hz FHD+ OLED (429ppi)
  • Processor: Google Tensor G2RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Operating System: Android 13
  • Camera: 64MP + 13MP ultra-wide, 13MP selfie
  • Connectivity: 5G, eSIM, wifi 6E, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3 and GNSS Waterproof: IP67 (1m for 30 minutes)
  • Dimensions: 152.4 x 72.9 x 9mm.
  • Weight: 193g

Stable battery and operating system

The phone has the company's flagship Tensor G2 chip from the Pixel 7, along with plenty of RAM and storage. That makes the 7a faster and more powerful than its midrange rivals and on par with high-end phones.

The battery lasts around 34 hours between charges, which is usually enough for a solid workday. The Google Pixel 7a will need to be charged overnight, just like its predecessor and the Pixel 7.

Google doesn't provide an expected battery life, but it should last over 500 full charge cycles with at least 80% of its original capacity. The phone is repairable by Google and third-party shops with genuine replacement parts available directly from iFixit.

The Pixel 7a is made of aluminum, glass, and recycled plastic, which makes up about 21% of the phone's weight. The company publishes environmental impact reports for some of its products. Google will recycle old devices for free.

The Pixel 7a runs the same version of Android 13 as the Pixel 7 Pro and other Google smartphones. It's fast, optimized, and beautiful, and it includes free access to Google's VPN, which is handy for keeping your data secure when using public Wi-Fi. Google provides security and software updates for at least five years, covering at least three major versions of Android.

Excellent camera

The Pixel 7a on the back has a 64-megapixel main camera and a new 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, improving on the already excellent Pixel 6a and putting the phone on par with the more expensive Pixel 7.

The main camera takes really good, well-exposed and impressive photos, with great levels of detail in good indoor and outdoor lighting. It does a particularly good job of capturing detail in portraits.

The ultrawide camera is also one of the better options available, a little weaker in detail and sharpness than the main camera, but handles high contrast and difficult scenes with confidence. The 7a doesn't have a telephoto camera, relying instead on digital zoom, which is fine at 2x but starts to fall off noticeably beyond 3x or 4x zoom.

The Pixel 7a has a 64-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera on the back.

The 13MP selfie camera is equally excellent. New this year is a fun long exposure mode to add a bit of movement to your shots, and a significantly faster low light mode that can make shadows look almost like daylight.

Overall, the 7a is a step up from the 6a and on par with the more expensive Pixel 7. It completely blows away mid-range competition around this price point.

Google Pixel 7a is really worth using

The Pixel 7a is the best mid-range Android phone out there. It packs even more of a premium smartphone experience into a smaller, cheaper form factor.

Google's top-of-the-line chip, RAM, and ample storage make it faster than most of its competitors. Its bright, gorgeous display has a 90Hz refresh rate to keep things smooth when scrolling, which is the main benefit of a premium phone, along with wireless charging.

The camera is class-leading, beating many phones twice the price and completely destroying the competition in the mid-range segment.

The back is plastic, not glass, so this may be a minus point, but most customers will use a case, so this is not a big problem. The 34-hour battery is definitely enough for a long day. According to technology experts, the Pixel 7a is very suitable for the money spent and is worth experiencing because its advantages are at the top compared to other smartphones in the same segment.
